Could Eee PC have "whole-day" battery life?

Yes, it could. Let's check how..

1. Whole-day is 8 hours:

Asus Eee PC 901 gives me 5 to 6 hours of battery life. It has 6600mAh 6 cell battery.

If Asus would use the same cells they are using on their 4 cell 5800mAh Eee 900 battery, it would have 8700mAh on it.

It would bring the battery life to 8 hours.

2. Whole-day is 12 hours minus lunch break

If Asus would use the same cells they are using on their 4 cell 5800mAh Eee 900 battery, and add 2 more cells to 901, it would have 11600mAh on it.

It would bring the battery life to 11 hours.

It would still be smaller than Acer Aspire One with 6 cell battery

3. Whole-day is 16 hours

If Asus would use the same cells they are using on their 4 cell 5800mAh Eee 900 battery, and add 2 more cells to 901, it would have 11600mAh on it.

It would bring the battery life to 11 hours.

Then marketing team would use the same benchmarks they used for 901 to get 7.8 hours and published that it can do 16 hours.

It was quite easy, wasn't it!

..I would really like to see those highcap cells on my Eee soon... Mugen? Any others?

UPDATE: 8 cell 8800mAh battery now on eBay for $88, thanks CHS

So whole work day with 901 fully possible today :) I'd rather get a 6 cell with highcap cells thou...

Gigabyte M912 convertible netbook review

The lowlights.

Screen. Slightly washed out. Not as bright as other netbooks. Indoor use only. Suspected CCFL backlight.Takes a lot of power.

Battery life. Could have been better. In full-on tests last night we were seeing 2.5hours. In lighter tests today it’s averaging 3hours. Max 4hrs (wifi off, typing), Min 1.5hrs (video, full brightness, Wifi.)

Style. Once opened, its quite boring. The plastics look a bit cheap.
Keyboard. Slight flex. It won’t affect you’re typing but it just feels a bit cheap.

Weight. At 1340gm, its one of the heaviest netbooks and not a device I’d recommend for ultra mobile use.

Mouse buttons. Not easy to press. Problem slightly offset by the ability to tap and click and use the touchscreen. Mouse pad is good though.

When used hard in tablet mode there is a significant heat build-up.

The highlights.

The screen resolution is fantastic.

The disk speed is amazing

ExpressCard slot means easy 3G!

Easy access to disk and memory. (Takes 2GB - I tested it)

Quiet

Very cool (no heat) in laptop use

The price! Two years ago a similar device was 1600 Euros. Now its under 500.

NOTES:

The backlight on the 1024x600 version is LED This means way better battery life!

The keyboard is the same as on Eee PC 700/900/901, so you could swap it to your local Eee keyboard. Picture here.

How to: Adding touch panel to Asus Eee PC 901

Hope this helps you all..

Some notes:

Taking the screen cover away can be tricky. That new hinge design is harder to open..

This panel is very thin. ( it has to be to fit ) Be extra careful! Use soft and thin double sided tape to secure it to the screen and to avoid metal contact.

It's gooooood!

UPDATE: there is a great follow up on installing touch and HDD, thanks HeartBeat!

Asus Eee PC 30G reveals some possibilities

HDD fits ontop of the adapter and RAM module

Close up from FCC pics

Fitting CF adaptor to my 900.. looks very possible..

Now that I know how Asus is doing it, it sounds actually better.

They are using a PCI-E to ZIF adapter for the HDD. This means that it would be really easy to upgrade it with 1.8 inch SSD or CF adapter.. both good choices for speed and durability.

Even more, this kind of adapter could be used on the "original" Eee PC 900 too..

Should I do it?.. Should I make the adapter available?..

Thanks Pika214 from Mobile01 forum

How to update Acer Aspire One's SSD

As users are finding Acer's new netbook a bit too slow, updating had to be done..

They are reporting even slower write speeds than on the Eee 900 16G , so this upgrade will make it much faster.

As the original SSD is located under the mainboard, you have to fully open the Aspire One

and cut away some plastic..

and pcb to make it fit.

Zif CF adapter with Transcend 8GB 300x CF card in place.

Not as easy as on 901, but fully possible...

It should be a bit easier on the HDD versions.

Asus Eee PC SSD read and write tests. 901 vs 900 vs 900 16G

There are some good news and some bad news...

Asus Eee PC 901 internal 4GB SSD

Asus Eee PC 900 internal 4GB SSD

Asus Eee PC 901 8GB PCI-E SSD

Asus Eee PC 900 16GB PCI-E SSD

New Asus Eee PC 900 16G, 16GB PCI-E SSD

For comparison, this is the 30GB Toshiba MK3008GL HDD

So... 901 has a bit better write speed but slower read on the 4GB SSD.

8/16GB PCI-E SSD is the same as on Eee 900..

But.. The new cheaper Eee PC 900 16G is slow... super slow.
I have tested XP on my 900's 16GB SSD, and it was slow.
But this new one is horrible slow.

My advice: Don't buy the new Asus Eee 900 16G.
If you have bought it, return it.

Earlier tests: 4G vs 8G vs 900
