Asus to make Eee PC 904 and 905, dropping 900 and 901?

New models again?? ... UPDATED

Asus Eee PC 904:

Asus is prepping Intel Atom based models 904 and 905 with 8.9 inch screen, but on the Eee PC 1000 chassis... and dropping 900/901?

It would be Eee PC 901 on Eee PC 1000 body:

Eee PC 1000 is 268mm wide, 194mm deep with weight almost 1.5kg

Eee PC 901 is 225mm wide, 170mm deep and weights 1.1kg

Now Digitimes is saying that Asus will put smaller screens to bigger housings to give users bigger keyboards...

I hope this is not true. ..UPDATE: looks true.. pictures from Blogeee

Is Asus listening only tech journalists that think mobile computers are for typists and there for bigger is always better???

UPDATE: It's official: 904: 8.9 screen, Celly, 80GB HDD and big 1000H body kit

Engadget: Asus' Eee 904 gets official

3G and netbooks

Yep, 3G is finally coming to netbooks too..

Asus Eee PC 4G has already been sold and subsidised from mobile carriers, but with external usb 3G modems. Now we are getting 3G radios inside the netbooks.

ECS has signed deals with European operators; their G10IL, 10 inch netbook, will be branded and sold with internal 3G modem by October. Their smaller and cheaper J-series will be soon available too.

Acer has 3G option too. Their Aspire One, 8.9 inch netbook, will be sold without the 3G at first, but I wouldn't be surprised to hear some operator deals pretty soon.

Asus has 3G possibilities on their Eee PC 901 and 1000. There is no official info about the future 3G models or deals, but our earlier investigations point to that direction.

VIA is also promoting their OpenBook platform with mobile connectivity options.

In overall this looks really good. Connectivity and lower prices can't be bad for the netbooks.

The Future of Windows XP

Microsoft has released the facts about the future of XP.

First up: Support

" With the June 30, 2008, "end of sales" date for Windows XP approaching, many people have asked me if they will still be able to get support for Windows XP. The answer is an emphatic "yes, you will continue to be supported." We recently released Service Pack 3 for Windows XP and we will continue to provide security updates and other critical updates for Windows XP until April, 2014."

Second: Future availability of XP

If you want to have XP on new PC, and your OEM is too lazy to make "XP downgrade CD" for you;

" you should get a new PC with Windows Vista Business or Windows Vista Ultimate, and then take advantage of downgrade rights to use Windows XP Professional for as long as is necessary."

" For customers interested in buying a low-end personal computer (often referred to as a "NetBook" or "NetTop"), we are making Windows XP Home and Windows XP Starter available for use on these budget systems."

" Additionally, System Builders (sometimes referred to as "local OEMs"), may continue to purchase Windows XP through Authorized Distributors through January 31, 2009. All OEMs, including major OEMs, have this option."

As you can see, there are ways to enjoy XP on UMPCs... ( we really need those as there are no ways to enjoy Vista on UMPC )

My 2 cents to all OEMs making UMPCs: Start shipping downgrade restore CDs!

An Update on the Windows Roadmap

How big is small?.. Aspire One with 901

If you look these netbooks alone, they all look really small..

Acer Aspire One and Asus Eee PC 901

..but some are way smaller than others... And smaller one of these 2 has 2 * better battery life..

Put MSI Wind on that pile, and it would be even wider than Acer on top.

The reason I'm using Eee PCs and taking about them here, is pure mobility. Yes, all these netbooks are light and small, but for me the away from desk use counts the most.

Away from any desk; I hardly ever have any place to put my computer when I'm working out of the office, so my mobile computer needs to be as small as possible but also needs to get the job done.

Right now, the Eee 900 still seems best for me..

I'll try to show what I mean on the video I'm doing: Eee PC 900 with touch and 3G is ready soon.
