Asus Eee PC 900 screen on 701

Hacking the Eee PC 900 has started...

While I was doing some testing, I remembered that some of you have asked if you could use the new 8.9 inch screen on 7 inch model.

..so the screen works, but bios needs to be hacked for full screen image.

..and you would need to modify the housing quite a lot.

More coming soon..

wonderful but the question is why? ;)

JKK said...

If you need to ask why, you don't need the answer ;)

JKK said...

..ok, just for you Kornel,

- buying just the screen is cheaper if you allready have 701

- you may have perfectly modded 701 and just want a bigger screeen

- because i(you) can..

- it's fun..

and because 701 has a PCI-E space for upgrade but you need to remove the 12GB Flash MLC SSD in 900.

I am lazy and low-tech. just buy a 900 is more suitable for me.

but I will wait Atom-base EeePC anyway~~~

ah ok, that makes more sense :)

I too will be waiting for the Intel Atom. I wonder if the price will drop on the existing lower performance Eee PC when the Atom does become available?

Will have to wait n see i guess.

JKK said...

Atom based Eee will perform pretty much the same as Celeron...

.. and what if they talk about dual core atom after the first one is released? waiting again?

Anonymous said...

I have bought one from Hong Kong now. Can´t wait for it to arrive! =) I think the celeron would be great for a year, in a year i look around for a new one with better specs. Dual core Atom would be nice =)

If you always are going to wait for the next one, or the better one you would wait for ages!

What kind of hacks are you planing JKK?

Love what you are doing her =)

Is there any space between the screen and the border case so a touchscreen could be installed or it will press the case too much and it will ruin it? i believe touchscreen would be the only thing it really needs. I know you want mobile internet, in my country they sell usb 3g modems with 25 euros 5 gig a month, i believe that's ok for my mobile needs. I am still waiting for a friend to buy it and bring it from UK (he is a mac lover), i can't wait anymore....i can't sleep...

sorry....i was talking about the 900 version

Greate work. I think there won't be any place for camera, speakers (can go to the bottom).
But when bios is hacked, maby someone will try to put 7" screen like from Samsung Q1U or similar.

Btw. do you think it is possible to change 13.3" XGA laptop screen with SXGA+ (and laptop has only 2.5MB VRAM)?

This unnatural act was done with *your* EeePC, right? Didn't you say your girlfriend has one too? Or is that now ex-girlfriend?!

I remember seeing discussion of this on the eeeuser forums and thinking to myself who would be the first to do it, I knew it would be you.

Wonderfull, i have assumed for a long time this would be possible, asked jkk on the livechat for this, talked with fido-dido from ebay how to get the 8,9 screens with complete housing.

In my opinion if you have a 701 and buying a 900 just for the bigger screnn but still have the same specs is crap (if you have enough $$$ then go for it).

Cant wait for the bios hack, hopping for 8,9 screens on ebay and maybe there will be someone to produce housings for the 701 to fit the 900 screen (with touch if possible).

You should be able to get this going with a modeline for this screen under Linux (may just be able to copy over xorg.conf depending on how they handled it).

For Windows, which you seem to be using, look into a program called PowerStrip:

can you exchange the Keyboad of the EEE710 to the EEE900?
Just thinking buying a EEE900 with US keyboard and change it to German keyboard...

JKK said...

Jens Ko. :

yes, you can swap the keyboard.

can you add a 8.9in touch screen to the 7in eee model? Or an oem 8in screen with the same connector?

Hello!!

I am really waiting for this hack!! I would buy this on ebay!!

Please share your code so others can help!

I do not want to buy eee pc 900 because is very expensive, I do not need that amount of RAM nor flash disk, I am using Linux and I do not need that hight values of memory! Also is not good for environment to put away almost new computers...

Thank you!!

Would this theoretically remove the modspace around the speakers?

I was just wondering if theres a 480x800 (might have to be 468x800 for proportion) resolution availible in the same general dimensions as the 8.9" screen, and if its cheaper than the 900's screen. That might be another nice hack.

Hey jkk thnx for all your help and guides man ur the best. I'm based in the UK and also wondered are you too?

Secondly I wanted to know, do you know if the black 20g 9" asus will be avaliable in UK and when? I'm selling my black 701 just to buy this.

Do you think I'm doing the right thing? As I was strugling with the 7inch. I hope the larger screen helps.

Anyway best wishes keep up the good work.

regarding hacking the BIOS, did you have any luck with 955resolution?

Anonymous said...

I read on the product sheet that the 8.9" panel comes with LED backlighting so you could eventually get rid of the inverter to gain some room. Yet I guess you'd have to get rid of the web cam, not to mention the speakers.

To judge the mechanics of the hack: could you post the dimensions of the spare display? (Only source I could find is http://www.asusparts.eu/index.php?cPath=1880_1881 which does not have specifications on the part).

Hi all,

JKK was right about this mod that the BIOS needs modding, however i have completed somewhat stable BIOS versions to make this mod a reality and put all the questioning to rest (just google search at eeeuser.com and you'll see what i mean)
i just figured now tha the project is almost to total completion i would share the info here so you all and JKK can catch up on what he started long ago.
the URL that my name links to is the thread showing the progression of my work with this subject on eeeuser.com
read the whole way through or at least most of it so you can make sure that you get the latest version of the bios for the model you have.

hey randy, could you just post a link, thats the most obscure website location i have ever read

Anonymous said...

Did anyone ever get a 900 screen working in a 70x, or has all that fizzled out now?

Anonymous said...

anyone know if there's a bios for this?
