Asus Eee PC 901 3.5G HSUPA unboxed. New features found too.

Yep, soon you don't have to mod it for 3G anymore..

Sim card slot behind the battery ready for some mobility..

But that's not all. When I first checked the details at Asus site, I noticed thay say it will have 16GB SSD. I was worried that they might use the slow SSD found on 900A and on some others, but I'm happy to tell that that's not the case:

Eee PC 901 3.5G has 8GB SLC SSD for OS and 8GB MLC SSD for storage. On other 901s there is only 4GBs for OS, so this is good upgrade. You can easily upgrade the second SSD but not the first one. You can check the speed difference of SLC and MLC from here.

I don't yet have any official prices, but we have info that it will be 399 euros at T-Mobile Germany.

Hi Scott, funny, I posted at same time about your 901 3.5G unboxing ;-)

Processeur intel Atom 1.6GHz
1Go de RAM
Disque SSD de 16Go (il semblerait que ce soit 2×8Go, je vous le confirme ASAP)
Wifi B/G
Module 3G HSUPA Huawei EM770
Pas de bluetooth !
Batterie 6 cellules

hey you said in your blog there is only wifi b/g is n missing for real? as far as i know the 901 has wifi b/g/n???

Anonymous said...

its a pity that bluetooth is missing also!!!! there was just one upgrade(3G) and lots of "downgrades"... :-(

No BlueTooth ?!?! I waited for this 3G model and now I still have to get the normal 901 :(
Very disappointing!

This is so annoying I sold my Eee PC 901 which I adored a month after I bought it for half the price because 4Gb for the OS just wasn't enough. I reccently bought a Eee PC 1000H for more than the asking price since it was thhe last one, though I love the 1000H. I am dual booting Windows XP and Windows Vista Ultimate at the moment.

in Fact, for the Wifi N and the BT is depend of the 3G provider : caus for Asus the The inclusion of 802.11n and Bluetooth capabilities is operator dependent.

SFR (Vodafone paterner) :
- Base EEE PC 901
- SDD 16 (8 SLC + 8 MLC)
- 6 Cells
- 3G modem : Huawei EM770
- Wifi B/G
- no BT

Wifi b/g?
No N?
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
Not good news...

Very good news about the 1st SSD module.
And I'm very happy about the 3.5G module, I need it.
But I'ld rather prefer Bluetooth too.

It's just a shame that is so bloody ugly. I went to my local electronics store and held my 900 up to the 901 on display - watch an ugly computer the 901 is. The touchpad is also goofy, I agree with JKK from his first review - they feel funny. The performance is nice, but the looks are hideous.

The 900A has the looks of the 900, but that glossy top just ruins it. Shame on ASUS for trying to copy Apple's ugly, glossy design.

Still - internal 3G isn't bad ...

JKK, is the wifi card Linux friendly, Atheros or..?

I suppose now the wait is on for yet another new Asus model, the S101-with-3G - that would make the S101 a *real* "business-netbook". Since that is how they are marketing it.

I agree with Peter: the S101 also needs internal 3G...

That 3.5G modem better be UMTS 900 capable. It is spreading well all over the world and 900 MHz is the (only) realistic frequency for providing good coverage, with 60% less signal degradation. In addition covering everything with 2.1 GHz would just be too expensive, and it doesn't penetrate buildings as well as 900 MHz.

JKK said...

I belive it's using EM770 from Huawei .. it's not 900Mhz 3G..

David said...

JKK - I know you haven't gotten the computer yet, but do you think it would be possible to mod the 900 to use this new 3G unit? How viable would that be, do you think? I'm not too crazy about opening up my 900 and soldering things around on it ...

Anonymous said...

JKK - you mention the internal SLC SSD is not easily upgradable. Do you mean because you'd have to open the entire case as opposed to just the back door for the 2nd MLC SSD, or do you mean because there is no source for the smaller internal SSD ???

Also - I've been wondering if the dell mini9 SSDs have the same pinout as the asus ones ??? Do they have the same physical dimensions as the asus internal SSD ? would they fit ? what is their master/slave setting ?

Sorry for asking so many questions. I wish these things were clearly documented in the various sites offering these SSDs for sale.

Hey JKK!

My Austrian 901Go has no Bluetooth or Draft-N WLAN Card, but it has one single 16GB PCI-e SSD.

:)

Anonymous said...

@Srv-02 Can you check is which kind of ssd it has? slow MCL or faster SLC type of memory? ..initial information was that it should have 8gig of fast ssd and 8gig of slow one. I'm fearing that they have swapped it to cheaper one.

Does anyone know which kind of connector is used for internal 3G? Is it soldered or can it be easily swapped when UMTS900 cabaple cards become available?

Anonymous said...

hey !!
anyone who knows something about whether asus will release a 1000Go too????
Jkk: at least its possible to solder a 3G card into the 1000, isnt it??
thx

Anonymous said...

@amoult
It is one single slow MLC SSD.

The 3G card is PCI-e. I haven't opened it yet, but i see it when the back cover is open. It is exactly the same spot where it should be on the standard 901.

I ordered a fast 16GB SLC from mydigitaldiscount, but suddenly there appeared thousands of cache write errors on xp and now it is impossible to boot the ssd (BSOD: unmountable_boot_volume) and I can't even modify the partition table with gparted, fdisk, cfdisk or xfdisk.
Is it possible that this ssd is not compatible with the 901go because it has no "first ssd"?
Please give me advice! :(

- World preview -
Eee PC 1000H GO is coming to the Italian market (in partnership with "TIM" mobile operator)!
In addition to the peculiar 3.75G (HSPA) module, luckily it has got 802.11n and Bluetooth too.

In Italy, Eee PC 901 GO has a *single* *fast* 16 GB SSD (SATA ASUS-JM S41 with Samsung chip).

Make sure you get the 8700mAh battery and not the 6600mAh.

The Finnish 901 Go also has a single fast 16 GB SSD.

So nice that they are using the SLC's instead of MLC's for OS

Hey can anyone tell me about a company that sells SLC SSD's???

And where the hell are the benchmarks???
