Let's check the insides..

Hmmm... no connector on the 3G modem slot... so no DIY upgrades..

512mb RAM soldered to mainboard... 512mb on the slot under the mainboard.. no easy upgrade..

SSD looks to use normal ZIF connector..

im surprised that no netbook have gone for a expresscard slot. but then i guess it would really undermine the ultraprotable work laptop segment...

JKK, is it possible to mod a touchpanel into the Aspire one ? Would the eee-touchpanel from fido-dido work in it ? Any idea how to get the linpus-driver for a touchpanel ?

is there any room for the old usb hub + bluetooth and various other devices? and of course the touch panel as the guy above has mentioned.

thinking about buying this in blue and it woul be lovely if i could mod it like i did with my eee.

Any idea if a 2gb sodimm would work? If you are waiting for the 1.5gb xp version, there probably wont be unless Microsoft change their mind. http://apcmag.com/microsoft_hobbles_xp_mininotes_with_1gb_ram_limit.htm

What they are saying if yo don't want to read it, is that they are capping the allowed RAM to be sld in an XP machine, because, wait for it, it might take away some marketshare from Vista. So MS is now screwing over it's own products, you have got to laugh. Anyway, based on that, I will probably buy the 512 linux AspireOne, upgrade it to 2.5gb and put an nlite XP on it - job done, that is if someone tests the 2gb sodimm. If not, I will post the results here.

no DIY 3g upgrade??? but YOU are jkk!!

Evidently different mobos for different versions, identical but for the connectors absent/presnet. SDD version is ZIP Pata, HDD with SATA, and the later 3G version with the 3G wiring. The (absent) SATA is the white tab on the edge of the mobo just under the ZIF.

The non DIY 3g upgrade Sux bigtime. This device would be so much better with a slot so current users can upgrade later. I got an aspire one, with 8gb ssd.
SD slot works like a charm, copying music to my microSd (with SD converter ofcourse) from my usb stick goes like the wind. (all ssd memory) intrested to know if a 2gb mem module will fit. But then again, its worth waiting for the 3g version. Still have to install xp or linux ubuntu or yellowdog on it since altough the basic menu are very user friendly, I want more from it. Its a perfect granny laptop for those who want to be in touch with their grandchildren by e-mail or msn.

i just tried putting in 2Gb, module, it did NOT work

Thanks Anon,
that's the answer I was needing to read.

It's Dell Mini for me:
2gb, fanless (giving it NO moving parts),
better Ubuntu Linux.

I just wish these Atom powered netbooks
used the newer Poulsbo (US15/UL11) chipset
instead of the less efficient GMA950.
It uses only 2.3 watts: 20 watts less energy!
That would certainly bring the temps down, sometimes over 100°F.

when you said that 2GB don't work, is that the machine doesn't boot or that the 2gb is not recognized?

I tried 2gb in the ZG5 as well, was looking forward to it working, but it just powers on with a blank screen. Luckily I didn't buy the module just for the ZG5, it was just a spare part I had, might try going from the 512mb to a 1gb module now, I'm sure it supports 1gb.
