Asus Eee PC 900A, more bad news...

Sorry..

SSD on Eee 900A at HKPUG

SSD on Eee 900A at HKEPC ( retail )

Eee 900A partly opened ( yeah, there is bt connector etc. but it's not helping now.. )

The bad news is that it looks like that the retail versions will have the slower MLC based SSDs after all.. HKPUGs sample was "earlier test version"

So it could run ok ( depends on your standards ) with default Linux but pretty slow with XP or anything that writes to the disk while in use..

..back to checking other SSD options for it as the speed will be about the same as on the 2nd disk on Eee 900/901 or 900 16G

Grrrr!

God i hate Asus now! lol I think I've given up now on the perfect eee!

I now think on a Lenovo ThinkPad W700 will do...

This is not good, but is this SSD soldered in place? Sorry if this has already been answered elsewhere.

Anonymous said...

@Anon: these SSD's are held by 2 screws i believe (from what i think jkk mentioned in an earlier 900A post), so you can upgrade in the future...

@HMSQ: same here. too many options...

I suppose it'll be certain that the primary SSD won't have a connector left in place either... That would have been the ideal place for an 8 GB SSD.

no model beats 901 then!

anyway... i think i am going for lenovo ideapad s10

Hi,

@Anonymous: you compare a W700 with a netbook - thats like a Smart and a PickUp ;o) and really not comparable .....

@jkk: i still wait for the Mini PCIe to ZIF Adapter :o) Any News about that? thanks!

regards
Carsten

@jkk : how can you tell the 'good' SSD from the 'BAD' based on the picture ?

Upsssssssssss.

Jean, my green eyes see everything ;)

Actually there is part numbers on flash chips and if you google those you can find the specs

Carsten, pci+e adapter video coming soon.. protos are working so they will be available pretty soon..

mtotho said...

whats the big deal with mini pci to zif adapter anyway? Zif to USB adapters are readily available. Most 1.8" hard drive 'disks' dont use more than the usb bandwidth. this device would however be useful for a 1.8" sold state disk.

JKK said...

big deal is that you don't need to open the device and solder...

.. and lose your warranty..

mtotho said...

true. And even alot of people willing to void warranty probably arent proficient in soldering, or willing to possibly damage their eee.

Is the MLC SSD in a 16GB model? If so, is it possible that the 8GB model has a SLC SSD?

JKK said...

it was 8gb version..

mtotho said...

i suppose it would be an easy upgrade to the 32 or 64gb ssd.. expensive though.. and they are quite slow.

just won a bid war on the 900a on ebay. $375 after shipping. GREAT deal i'd say

Speed of SSD is urgent.
But more interesting for me is quality of wi-fi conection (strange, range) in various netbooks, but nobody test it yet.

I got my MSI Wind!!

I can also make wind, but this smells a litte bit ...

Hi there,
does anybody know if I can just swap the SSD in my 900a? E.g with those from the link in the article?Im eyeing the 64gb SSD with Read/Write Speed: 40/20. Is that any faster than the built in one? Will it make sense?
Thanks

It seems buyer or potential buyers are equally confused about the SSD whether soldered or PCI-e slot, and whether can be upgraded in the future when more SSDs come into the market place. ASUS tactic is to confuse the buyer into buying the wrong umpc for their needs thereby increasing sales at the expense of the buyers.

It's alot easier to mod the OS for the specific SSD, or find a "premodded" version, than to rebuild your sweet EeePC... I'm perfectly satisfied with the dualboot on my "slow" 16gig SSD. A modded WinXP sp3 and Ubuntu-8.10. It boots anyway faster than my dualprocessor 2,8Ghz Xeon-server with 1gig ram and scsi-drives... Nicco/Sweden.
