Asus Eee PC 900A. Some good news and some bad news

Good news first?

The 8GB SSD is one pci-e card. ( not split in 2 )
It uses faster SLC flash, made by samsung, so you could expect similar speeds as 900/901 internal 4GB SSD has.

Bad news:

It uses different batteries than any other Eee PC ( different connector ) and they are cheapo 4400mAh ones.
This means you can't use your old batteries from 701 or 900. And you can't buy bigger or better ones yet.

Shitty! Well, first mod from me might be a battery mod...

UPDATE: you can take away the good news... there is only bad news

Thanks Max [ translated ]

Ouch! Asus just draw a line in the sand between older and new releases! I wonder if this change will be the norm from now on?

What lid color is that 900A?!

JKK said...

It's available in Shiny White, Shiny Black and Purple ..

the one on pictures looks closest to purple ;)

The SLC drive at 8GB is perfect. The profile picture makes the 900A battery look quite a bit deeper than the one on the 900. Any estimates on how long the tiny battery will last with the Atom processor?

The connector on the 900A battery looks like the connector on the 1000H battery.

JKK said...

yep, it's the same as on 901 too..

but it doesnt help..

Damn it. Two things I do not like.
1. The glossy screen.
2. The battery. Holy crap. That sucks. But do not fear as 3rd party vendors will pick up on this and notice the high demand for new batteries...there should be some on the market within a few months...I hope! =[

Damn glossy screen...nkfsjdgljdsklg

JKK said...

it has the same screen as others.. not glossy.

Not sure from previous comments -- is the battery of the 900A the same as the 901 and the 1000h?

JKK said...

"It uses different batteries than any other Eee PC"

= not the same as on 901 or 1000h. 900A battery is 4 cell battery where 901/1000 uses 6 cells so they are too big for 900A

Does the 900A only have 4G for the operating system too? Or is it 8G full for the c: operating system and an empty slot to upgrade with a Buffalo 32 or 64 G SSD hard drive? Thanks.

Anonymous said...

I hope it's the 8G for c: operating system and we would not have to be constraint to the 4G space issue on the 900 or 901.

does it look like a 1.8" drive could fit?

It always seems to be an issue of give and take with manufacturers these days... They should just sticking to giving so that we can stick to taking! :)

its all to make money. The mini pci are vendor locked so they make more money on their next eee model with 3g included. Also, so that eee 900 owners can go putting wireless N in their eee.

They dont want us to buy the cheap online batteries.. they want to charge exorbitant rates for the batteries they will be offering (until cheap third parties come out).

any news on when and where i can get this (ebay straight from HONG KONG, Taiwan, Tapei, I DONT CARE)

Any idea of a U.S. Release Date?

Fast SSD! Good news! 3rd party batteries will be available soon enough, but of course this doesn't help those of us who already have bought expensive replace batteries for previous Eee models.

I'd be pleased to have 3.5-4 hours of battery life with 900A.

Ouch! There goes my plan of getting a Mugen 7800 mAh battery right away... Even though the Atom helps a bit with the battery, that change sucks big time.

Are there any *larger capacity* official Asus batteries even for the old models available anywhere yet in decent numbers? I have no confidence in them in offering any for the 900A for a long, long while. Might as well wait for six months for Mugen Power units... if they decide to make any. Too bad that SSD wasn't primary; in all likelyhood the primary has even been disabled somehow with our luck.

Asus gave, and Asus hath taken away; blessed be the name of Asus. Job 1:21.

Only the top of the lid is glossy right? The space below the keyboard is just matte I thought?

No 1,8" HD slot ithink, damn!

Anonymous said...

That is Asus live, kidding the customers :-(

mtotho said...

@axel. There is no slot zif connector for 1.8" hdd, however, there may be room to fit one... and room for 1.8" hdd

901A with the current specs are good enough for me: fast 8Gb SSD, ~4hrs battery life and <1Kg. I assume that dual boot (Ubuntu and XP) is possible.

Anonymous said...

It's not a bad deal, it's good - but it could have been _very_ good, had they not expended that extra effort to change things.

Anonymous said...

The specs and the price go well together. I wouldn't expect more at 299 €. Compared to cheaper 900 16G and 701 4G, and more expensive 901 20G, 900A is a good deal.

German availability date is postponed to 28th August. :(

in France , you could found the 900A in some Leclerc supermarket : 299€ (include VAT) for Wihte-Linux 900A

eee 900a is available at alternate.de for €299... will arrive on friday or saturday... wonder why there's nothing on asus.com (driver, manual) for this modell at this moment... can't wait for it...

got my 900A in germany begining august 08 from pda max (which are the most up-to-date guys). Works perfect without any issues.

why dont they just allow us to configure what we want on it and pay extra if we want to, like dell does? No I dont want to buy the dell.. I just want a 901a with the faster read/write and a better cam, without the bulkier 901 body (yuck). asus please get a clue. With that does anyone know if we can ge the better cam as a part from asus and install it in the 901a?

Anonymous said...

I mean 900A :)?

Anonymous said...

I like the 900 more because ASUS is written on the device instead of Eee. But technically they do not differ much. But I would like to have the 900A with the ASUS label.
