Asus Eee PC 900 16G too slow for Japan

Yep, they will now get the faster SLC SSD...

" Eee PC 900-X the reason for the postponement of launch was the original specification, MLC type of flash memory with a 16 GB plan, but a last minute goal to improve performance, drive to start the 8 GB SLC, sub-8 GB drive "

So they will get fast 8GB SLC SSD + slow 8GB MLC SSD instead of one slow 16GB flash on their Eee PC 900-X

The difference is huge: 8GB SLC is 35/28 read/write where 16GB MLC is 30/8

Sigh... just one fast primary drive with a capacity of 8GB is all I ask. Instead we got all sorts of variations other than that.

The only model here with 8GB fast primary is the 1000 I don't want.

buy the 900A and add fast 3rd party SSD..

.. i just got mine and video will be up soon :)

Yeah, it works but that won't leave the secondary slot free for other stuff. :)

you cant use the 2nd slot for anything else than storage anyway...

I was thinking 3G. The 901 would be easier to mod for that, but it's heavier and more expensive...

Is there any news about Buffalo SSD

can you expand the primary SSD to exceed the initial 4G limitation on the 901. e.g. upgrade to 8G of primary and say add 32g of SSD on the secondary?

32GB buffalo SSD will arrive approx 19th / 20th Sept, maybe sooner.

You could expand the internal SSD on 901 to 8GB if you can find one.. from Eee 1000.

and you could expand the 2nd drive to 32GB or more with MyDigitalSSD or Buffalo ones

sounds like there is not 3rd party SSD that can upgrade the primary internal one to 8G - except if you can find one from eee 1000 (but that would be impossible because who would take it out from the 1000)

Actually i got news about that a second ago! there will be SSDs for that soon!

more about that later....

that's so cool JKK. Thank you so much. I should be getting my 901 sometime soon. I got lots of info from you site. Keep it up!

Can I get faster SSD for my regular 900? because i have the dreaded 16GB one here... just checking because you mentioned earlier just 900A.

JKK said...

yep, Sari, I will have news about that later today...

Alright awesome. I really like the computer otherwise so if it can be fixed like that then it is just fine!

jkk, what do you mean by the 2nd slot? do you mean the zif?

jkk do you know any mini pci-e 3g modem for europe? and if it's compatible with the eee 901.

I didn't mean mPCIe 3G modems. I was talking about a modded-in 3G (by using a usb device) on the secondary slot - like you did on your 701 and 900. :)

There's not that much available space for such mods in the 900(A)... or at least it feels like it.

I just recieved a mail from FedEx that MDD has sent me my 32GB SLC PCI Express PCI-e SSD, I am fairly excited about soon getting it in my mailbox over the weekend and early next week.

With a rated Read/Write of 47 and 40 MB/s, it should definately help speed up the awfully slow EEE 900 16GB (new version) PC. The best part is that it is as easy as the 901 to replace, just open the RAM bay door and unscrew two screws on the SSD card, out it comes and you can place the new one in its place. Looking really forward to improving this little wonderful machine further.

Oh, and I have nearly completed my LED modification to the keyboard. So far I have carefully used a Dremel to cut through the letters of the keys and filled them with slightly white-tinted silicone. The LED wires are coming over the weekend as well and I'll place those below the keyboard, similar to a modification done by someone else to a white EEE earlier, but with a battery pack stuck outside (I'll steal some power from the motherboard). This should allow for my keys to be illuminated during dark times as well, while maintaining readability during daytime.
