Jkk, would the 4gb, faster SSD (albeit smaller length) from the 900/901 be recognized in the 8gb slot? or any chance of fitting a 1.8" drive on top of there? thanks

900A is already sold in France for 2 weeks ;-)

Having the 900a for almost 2 weeks now I have to say that Im pretty satisfied. I installed XP right away because Linux seemed to me like some software for kids with those monstrous icons :D
I made a mistake and formatted the SSD in NTFS first. That sucked so bad (very slow) that I was about to return the 900a. After reading some forums I converted the SSD in FAT32 and the result was like a day and NIght :)
My next step would be to install vista on it and to see if that will be any better...

I also got my 900A today. The weird thing is that the battery isn't as solidly in place as in my 701 (it rattles a bit) and the power indicator blinks all the time - both when charging (orange) and discharging (green)!

the back and forward for horizontal scrolling is a Firefox issue in Linux and can be changed in Firefox's about:config

Myles, fixing the firefox bug will not enable 3 finger swipe... which works on xp.

In Ubuntu (Intrepid Alpha 4) you can see the battery time and it gives me more computing time than the stock xandros (6 hours vs. 4,5 hours), so if you want to try a real Linux distro, I would recommend trying Ubuntu Intrepid in a month or two (I have it on my SD card, sometimes I use it).
And does the EEE 900A have that anoying EEEPC fan that runs at low temperatures?

Anonymous said...

Yes, the fan of the 900A is running right now on mine... the temperature just can't be high enough to call for ventilation. I'll need to upgrade to a real distro sometime soon.

hey,

i also have a 900a and i'm really disappointed about the speed of my XP system. but as a read now here it could be caused by the ntfs-format of my ssd. so should i reinstall it after formatting it to fat32? i don't find any clear answer to that question on google...
so i'm hungry for your feedback!!!
thanks in advance...

greetings daniel

by the way: besides this little performance problem, i love my eee (of course ;) )

Live Session would be nice =)

Hi,
Can you clarify the installed SSD?
The Asus web site says:
8G
16G

Is that either 8G or 16G?
Or maybe 8G + 16G?

thanks
gordon

@Daniel
I had the same problem. What you have to do is to install partition magic 8 on the 900a and just convert it to FAT32. You would have to restart then. It takes about 20 minutes. After that you'll be more happy with your 900a :D

Live Session? Oh yes will be great ;-)

Hi JKK,
Have you heard/does anyone here know,
if Asus will be offering the Asus Downloads for Linux to 700/4G users?
Are all the downloads free or are there pay applications as well?
Thanks in advance,

I've been considering carefully stripping off that "film" on the lid. Underneath you can see the same plastic as the rest of the case - it would appear to be plain and nice underneath that film. I've yet to muster the courage to rip it off though... Would you care to try first? ;)

hello everyone, hello proudowner...

i've converted my 900a 8gb ssd from ntfs to fat32 and it is FUN... so happy to have done it... installing stuff and working at all is much faster now... so thanks a lot for information and encouraging...

greetings,
daniel

Il be getting one of these. So a 1.8" hdd doesn't fit standard like on other models?

also that finger print magnet lid... is it the same shape as a 700? would switching the lids be easy enough.

my opinion is the eee pc 901 is much better than eee pc 900A model coz the upgrade possibilities are much higher than any other eee pc in the market right now, am very much satisfied with my 901 white model, much more when the 1.8 hard drive gets installed. 900A model is not a genuine eee pc.

@thazlett,

The 700 lid is slightly smaller than the 900a. The 900 lid would probably fit the 900a though.

But I'm with you. I hate shiny notebooks/netbooks. They look good... as long as you wear gloves.

Hello jkk good work !
Do you notice any temperature difference in general use between 900 and 900A ? The 900 often becomes quite hot around the keyboard after a while. Is the 900A significantly cooler ? Is the fan as audible as on the 900 ?

Thanks, /gunnar
