Dell Streak ( aka Dell Mini 5 ) first inpressions

Cool?

Some notes:

- I would like it to have a kick stand on it

- Dell UI is ok but I think I still would go with standard Android

- It should have a micro usb port for charging.. I hate carrying custom cables

- Waiting for Android 2.2 will feel looooong.

- Battery life seems better than I thought.. more testing needed..

More Dell Streak tests soon...

This could be a good alternative to the Sony Vaio P

I liked the video with the webcam :)
How did you get that cool colors?

Think I'm beginning to love Android OS. I'm contemplating whether I can ditch away the thought of a full Widows devices I've been longing for a while now.

This is a good video JKK. This is the perfect size to carry on with me. I am diching my laptop when at work in the field because I use the web to perform 95% of what I do when out of the office.

It should be the greatest UI on Android...
But I'm wondering, what will happen when we click on the app name near the notification bar when an app is running? Really hope it will be able to swap between apps with that part!

Thanks for your impressions! How bright is the display compared to your Moto Droid? Is it usable in sunlight?

Good stuff! what kind of video files does it support?

Very cool device, just disappointing about the battery size - I thought it would be about 2500mAh, not 1500;(

heloo Jkk! how is the battery compared to Archos 5 it? Thanks!

Thinking this will be really incredible once 2.2 arrives. For those a bit disappointed with battery life, the battery is not overly large and can be swapped, so for long day needs bring an extra battery.

yes i am an Apple fanboy, but I think after this review from JKK, my vegetable tablet can stay home certain days while this can handle many daily needs in a great size.

JKK.......bluetooth headset for calls. Makes this very capable phone. But yes it does look silly if you hold the device up to your ear

How do you connect this to the PC?
Is is via a docking station or directly by an interface cable to the USB?

Looks good. I like the UI and overall features

This is a great device, however I need to know more about Gorilla Glass. I'm sure I'll many scratches in case it is not a good glass.

@JKK any tests that you can perform in this direction ?

There is a dock, a bit disappointed that it wasn't reviewed here, maybe not available? I'm curious if USB Host or OTG has been tested for this device. That would make it an instant winner for me. Proprietary port does not give me much hope...but one can dream.

Handsfree bluetooth calls are reportedly available for 2.2.

How does the screen look in direct sunlight?

Thank you!

Handsfree bluetooth works with Android just fine... I have it running on a HTC Magic with 1.6. It will work as shipped... do not need to wait fo rthe update to 2.2.

@Jim

Yes it has a USB cable very much like an iPhone.

Great video, nice to see more hands-on footage of the Streak. Just heard that Dell is releasing it for $500 in the US. That's a huge disappointment, because that's way too much for what it is, especially considering the HTC Evo 4G is going for half that when the rebate is taking into consideration.

I can see spending $250 on such a device, but $500 would be better spent on a Viliv S5 (or N5, once it's released) or Umid mbook BZ.

@Claudia

The N5 isn't a device you will keep on all day or/and connected to the web all day, the Dell Streak however is just like any other smart phone a constant on device.

There's plenty of smart phones that cost more than pocketable UMPCs so you can't really compare the two.

the display appears better than HTC Amoled in sunlight according to fourth picture (just under the scooter)

@Anonymous

The battery life of the Viliv S5 is six hours, with 200 hours standby time. It only takes a couple of seconds for the S5 to come out of standby, so it's practically instant-on. Given that free WiFi is available almost everywhere in most urban areas, I don't think it's too much of a stretch to compare it to the Streak since they're both being offered at the same price.

The HTC Evo 4G, a direct competitor to the Dell Streak, arguably offers more functionality than the Streak for half the price.

Just got mine today...i love it.

Would like to know, however, how to get the webcam work on yahoo messenger or skype. With skype, the back camera is working and not the front.

Good review...More than anything, this is the best phone so far. Dell Streak is going to shake the market, make a revolution and apple is going to go backyard. Mostly combination with Android make it much better. Freedom of phone, apps, multimedia, web experience...Bye bye iphone & ipad.
