Samsung Galaxy Tab first impressions

So... cool devices from all aspects. The fact I can't charge it from USB ports still keeps me wondering what Sammy guys were thinking..

Here is few pics showing the charging and non charging icons.

UPDATE: it charges if you don't use it same time.. but takes 6 to 7 hours.

If you use it same time it doesn't even keep the state.

Next up will be hacking it even better and more testing..

No charging over USB is a no go for me. I dont understand this too, but i think you try to hack this, hopefully :-)

Charging by USB for a 16.28 watt hour battery by USB ~5V would take around ~3.5 hours. For larger devices USB charging isn't as practical as for smartphones with much smaller batteries.

What is the name of the random video player you mentioned?

I like how you skip over the android issues. I can watch all the video on my iPad just great. I was hoping europe had some courage to tell the truth but I was wrong. We know you like it, it's nice but review it right. Works fine, it ok, it crashes but it ok are not good reviews.

Anonymous, nope, you can't watch any flash videos on your pad.

.. I demonstrated the weakness of current implementation of flash and said I want it to work differently ie youtube on youtube player and content that doesn't have player on flash.

To be honest I was very happy to see you reviewing the tab. I have been an engadet fan for a long time and have left them for gizmodo. Why? they provided lopsided reviews to one end only. But when I visited the site again, I saw a link for your site. Thus, my comment. I am able to watch all the video that I want on my iPad. period. I even watched yours. iPad is an entry level format factor tablet, as well as the tab following it. Therefore, I wanted you to out-right say it is performing good or bad in each area that matters to a consumer. Why? You have the darn thing and we the consumers will be flocking to your site for a good review. You are able to do what you do because the iPad came about. It looked really odd to see you with the tab as a phone. And yet you said nothing. Oh, three of my computers are hp, one MacBook pro, and an iPad. All that I use at work is an IBM pc and my iPad. So I could care less about any company but a good product. I hope to visit your site again for a good review please.

Great review. Thanks.
Would have been nice to add in the phone functionality - using it as a speakerphone over the usual mobile network as well as for skype. For me, the fact that I can use it as a phone either in handsfree or speaker mode is (even though I only make a few calls a day) is important.

Jkk for full screen games try SpareParts from Market and uncheck Old application compatibility in the settings of the app.

Great review, but I am put off by some of the testing, what is the next best device to come out, I think I will wait for that.

USB port has 500mA. You need to plug it to 4 USB to get 2A as from wall charger. If I understood correctly battery is 4000mA means you would charge it from USB aprox 8 hours even more if you use it in the same time.

Good review-just two comments: first, despite the 'not
charging' indication when connected to a pc by usb,
just like the ipad it WILL charge when turned off (tried
it last night), so you can leave the charger at home. Second,
if you want to use it as a phone, turn it upsidedown, turn the volume
down and keep your fingers off the side mike. Works fine.

About the USB charging, and some people being able to charge and others not, or weakly...

I think it is about the powered and non-powered usb ports. I am guessing the samsung tab pulls so much current for charging that it has to be a powered usb port. Can you please check that JKK?

By the way I loved all your reviews of the Galaxy tab and I am fan of your reviews in general.

Can you please also check if you could lower the volume of the speakers that only you can hear them during a call, so they work as an earpiece?

Thanks & Regards!
Aron
