My first touch with HTC Shift

Just few hours ago I got to test HTC Shift, the dual OS hybrid UMPC. It was production model, so it should be the final version.

First impressions: Solid quality finish, metal on the front, similar to N810. Size felt just right for me. Slider was ok, but a bit clunky. It felt a bit heavier than Asus Eee.

Second impressions: Screen is bright and clear. It has best interpolated 1024 x 600 mode I have seen. It responded ok, touch screen worked really good but felt a bit soft. Thumb typing in slider mode was not that good.. it should be a bit less wide. Typing on laptop mode was fine but the keyboard is really small.. ok for me. Stylus is tiny. Hinges/rails felt even more clunky and loose as i started to really test the usage modes... they didn't look that strong either. That tiny mouse pad is useless.. i wish they had used synaptics pointer.

Final impressions: It felt really good multi use umpc. Slate mode is really good, specially if you haven't got used to pointer mouse.. one hand holding it, on hand typing urls etc. was ok.. felt a bit heavy like that. Connectivity is super with hsdpa, wifi and bt.

Bad battery life (- 2 hours), limited WM side and hinge/slider clumsiness keeps me still thinking if I'm going to buy it. I'm now actually happy it's not out yet, as now we can see what's coming from CES. If it had been out earlier, i would have bought it without testing..

HTC doesn't want to compete with Asus Eee PC

Which i truly believe and understand.. but..

Laptop Magazine spoke with HTC CEO Peter Chou about handsets and platforms. One of the topics was about HTC's first UMPC, HTC Shift and Asus Eee PC.

When asked if HTC sees Eee PC as their competitor, Peter Chou said:

"I don’t consider them as a competitor. We don’t want to compete with them as we are in a different segment. We are primarily looking at the prosumer or mobile professionals. Our strategy is to align more with the mobile operators."

If we look at HTC's and Asus's marketing on these two devices, they really look different. But if we put them side by side and to actual use, there is not that much difference after all.

Yes, there are huge differences on the hw and sw side, Shift has all the bells and whistles and Eee runs Linux... but new Eee's will have Windows .. and we might not need bells on mobile computers.

What most prosumers or mobile professionals need is a robust system to access information. Storing company data on a mobile device is very dangerous. More and more companies are just accessing their data and applications tru Internet.

Cloud computing, server based mobility and central management are the methods in use. For that kind of use, Eee PC is actually better as it has robust flash drive, good user friendly and common design and far better battery life. Yes, Eee lacks internal HSDPA, but you can get free modem from your operator or use it with your mobile phone.

So what about operators? "Our strategy is to align more with the mobile operators"

That is exactly what Asus is doing. There are all ready many operator deals with Eee PC and HSDPA modems. Subsidising 1300 euro device or 400 euro device can make a big difference on operators decisions.

So.. HTC doesn't want to compete with Asus Eee PC... I don't think Asus is asking if they want or not.

I waited for the Shift for a long time. I thought about buying it many times. But the bottom line on professional mobile computing is that you need to have minimum weaknesses with maximum usability. For me, the Asus Eee PC was just the right amount of those features, with the added bonus of a very good price.

So.. HTC.. Asus Eee PC competes with Shift. Like it or not.

HTC Shift X9501 to get GPS upgrade

3G version of HTC Shift will get software update to enable onboard GPS..

HTC is making SnapVUE far more useful now.. as GPS chip and antenna are already there, we just need drivers and software, and that's what they are doing.

HTC will use TeleNav navigation software.

..and as you can hack Opera Mobile to it, it might be something to consider again.

HTC Shift UMPC vs Palm Foleo, size vs size

10 inch screen Foleo compared with 7 inch screen Shift...

HTC Shift UMPC size confirmed

Now we need the rest of the details and a big button labeled "Buy, Available Now"

Hmmm.. So there is only 19 mm size difference with Fujitsu U1010 with smaller 5.6 inch screen.. If Shift will sell near $/€1000 with HSDPA, it will eat others alive.

UPDATE: looks actually thinner than 31mm

UPDATE: confirmed as 207mm (L) x 129 mm (W) x 25 mm (T).. with 800g for weight

Official HTC Shift details

Updated info: Weight 800g, size: 207mm x 129 mm x 25 mm

Windows Vista operating time: Up to 2 hours!!! WTF! I hope it will be closer to 3 hours as Hugo said at GottaBeMobile.com

I also hope we will get the full WM6 when it's shipping...

UPDATE: Kevin Chen, HTC: No full WM6, resolution will remain 800 x 480..

jkkmobile: WTF!!! if it gives only 2 hours, has no wm6 and resolution still stays 800 x 480, it will make the perfect design useless!

Buy UMPC with Vista Business, get XP cd too

Fujitsu includes XP recovery and utility disks with U810 Vista Business.

And Kohjinsha SH8 should ship with XP soon...

.. and as HTC Shift has Vista Business, you can downgrade it too. Let's hope HTC is smart and ships XP media with it. Options can't hurt!

Thanks Glenn for Fujitsu link!
