Intel opens Atom Dev Program, app store to follow

"We want to fuel the growth of Intel Atom-based products designed for the mobile lifestyle," said Renee James, corporate vice president and general manager, Intel Software and Services Group. "The netbook has become one of the most popular consumer devices in the market today, but its true potential has been limited by applications that are not optimized for its mobility and smaller screen size. The Intel Atom Developer Program provides a great opportunity for developers to create useful and inventive applications that will unlock a netbook's potential while opening a new sales and distribution channel."

The program offers a streamlined and transparent process that will take the developer from application creation through testing and, finally, to the go-to-market stage. Intel is working with netbook original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and other partners to create application storefronts through which validated applications will be sold.

Intel: Netbooks not good for multitasking, creating or HD videos

Intel: " Can I replace my aging laptop with a netbook?

No. A netbook doesn't have the processing power and functionality you'd need to run many of the applications your current laptop supports, even if it's a few years old. The good news is that today's laptops offer more bang for the buck than ever before. You'll immediately reap the rewards of greater performance, quality and reliability by upgrading your system. "

... and looking at the chart, netbooks can't:

- multitask
- create or edit videos or photos
- Encode music
- Watch HD movies
- Run complex office software

Uuuuh.. I have been encoding videos while editing pictures and uploading them. Back at CeBit I edited over 40 videos and all photos on my Eee PC.. And as we know, HD plays fine on any netbook...

Netbook doesn't have the processing power and functionality ???

What do you think? Netbooks are ok for all tasks but are just smaller and less powerful than some laptops?

There has been some speculation about Intel restricting Atom cpu to be used only on netbooks with 10.2 inch screes or less...

.. well as you can see from these pictures, 13.3 inch "netbooks" allready exist. MDT is also making 12 inch ones. I have seen some even with 14.1 inch screens...

Same goes vith VIA. There are plenty of those with bigger screens.

And speaking of plenty, just check how many different netbooks GlobalSources is listing..

So yes, there is and will be netbooks/laptops with Atom and big screens.

Dual core Atom on netbook?

I know there are people waiting to to get one...

UPDATED

... but it will not happend.

Intel has been talking about dual core Atom and always saying it's for nettops.

It has 8w TDP compared to 2.5w on N270 so it gives about 25% less battery life on the current netbooks.

But that's not all:

I just got info that Intel will not let oems to use it on netbooks

More about that later.

... So if you were waiting for one, stop waiting and buy something that is available.

UPDATE: I got my info from a OEM that is making Atom based netbooks. They don't want me to publish who they are.

.. Intel said to them that they don't sell Atom 330 for netbooks.

.. 25% less battery life figure came from them.. Atom 330 uses more power than Atom N270 on any use

.. Atom 330 would need much more cooling -> size/weight and price problems

.. they also say that Intel Atom 330 is not even compatible with the platforms used with N270, as it is made for desktops. ( I didn't get info about the actual difference )

My thoughts: Atom 330 is for desktop use ( nettops ) and Intel doesn't want it on mobile systems , but there could be a Atom N330 with lower TDP .. for netbooks. But as it hasn't been even announced yet, it might take some time.

So.. if you ask me should you wait for dual core Atom netbook, I'd have to say no.

I don't quite get how the Clarion MID would be "the star of the show" ...

I would pick Lenovo Ideapad and Aigo anyday before that black box ..

Intel's new PCI-E SSD drives.. Any good?

Key Features
• 4 GB, 8 GB and 16 GB capacity
• ATA UDMA4 support
• ZIF connector or Mini PCIe form factor
• Weight
— ZIF connector: approximately 11 grams
— Mini PCIe form factor: approximately 8 grams
• 1.65 mW idle power (TYP)
• 314 mW active power (TYP)
• Uses Intel MLC NAND Flash Memory
• Sequential read: 38 MB/s
• Sequential write: 10 MB/s

• Footprint
— ZIF connector: 38 mm (L) x 54 mm (W) x 3.2 mm (H)
— Mini PCIe form factor: 50.95 mm (L) x 30 mm (W) x 3.8 mm (H)

The ZIF version is currently used on Acer Aspire One, so we know how "good" that is..

If I compare the speeds to similar SSDs on Eee 901, Intel loses badly on write speeds...
