Wow! This is good news!

New Asus Eee PC 901 in France has high capacity cells and really fast 16GB SSD.

8700mAh 6 cell will give easy 7 to 8 hours on real use...

..and that SSD speed is super!

Right now we don't have info if this is France only and XP only, but we will keep our eyes open.

Sim card slot behind the battery ready for some mobility..

But that's not all. When I first checked the details at Asus site, I noticed thay say it will have 16GB SSD. I was worried that they might use the slow SSD found on 900A and on some others, but I'm happy to tell that that's not the case:

Eee PC 901 3.5G has 8GB SLC SSD for OS and 8GB MLC SSD for storage. On other 901s there is only 4GBs for OS, so this is good upgrade. You can easily upgrade the second SSD but not the first one. You can check the speed difference of SLC and MLC from here.

I don't yet have any official prices, but we have info that it will be 399 euros at T-Mobile Germany.

Like I said, still some time to wait, but i will report as soon it's available...

UPDATED: I got pile of emails asking if the other adapter works on 901.. answer is no. It is set as master so you can't use it with internal SSD.

As you may know, Eee PC 901 has empty places for 3G and SIM cards..


..and the connectors are missing too. ( they save 20 cents... )


So we have to first solder the Mini PCI-E connector...


.. and raisers to secure the 3G card.

But to use it we need to solder the SIM card holder too... ( if you plan adding a EVDO card you don't need the SIM holder )


As the SIM card holder is inside the Eee, you need to cut a hole for it..


Then short these 2 pins to power the 3G card..


..and these to enable USB lines to card ( we just shorted, you might want to use 27ohm resistors )

Last thing is to find antenna for it or just use one of it's wifi antennas. Packer is using a spare antenna from a phone where i just plugged wifi cable on it..



Surf is up!

Depending the card you have, you may also have to make a switch for it to shut it down when you don't need it.. Cards like SierraWireless 3G card supports turning it off from software, but some other cards doesn't.

Soldering these connectors is not a easy task so I'd say this is not for everyone... If you need to do it but can't, try your friends or local electronics shops.. nope, not me..

If you were thinking about getting the 32GB SSD from Eee 1000 to another Eee, you shoud note that it's not good for OS use, but pretty fast on reading..

8GB one would be good on my 901.. hmm.. I got a word that they both ( 8BG and 32GB on Eee 1000 ) cost about $100 ..

That last picture shows the different sizes.

Smaller one is the internal one ( 4GB on 901, 8GB on 1000 )

Bigger one is the one you can easily access from bottom RAM door
( 8/16GB on 901, 32GB on 1000 )

Some notes:

Taking the screen cover away can be tricky. That new hinge design is harder to open..

This panel is very thin. ( it has to be to fit ) Be extra careful! Use soft and thin double sided tape to secure it to the screen and to avoid metal contact.
