How-to: Internal 3G HSDPA on Asus Eee PC 901

3G HSDPA enabled Eee PC 901...
As you may know, Eee PC 901 has empty places for 3G and SIM cards..
..and the connectors are missing too. ( they save 20 cents... )
So we have to first solder the Mini PCI-E connector...
.. and raisers to secure the 3G card.
3G card secured..
But to use it we need to solder the SIM card holder too... ( if you plan adding a EVDO card you don't need the SIM holder )
As the SIM card holder is inside the Eee, you need to cut a hole for it..
Then short these 2 pins to power the 3G card..
..and these to enable USB lines to card ( we just shorted, you might want to use 27ohm resistors )
Last thing is to find antenna for it or just use one of it's wifi antennas. Packer is using a spare antenna from a phone where i just plugged wifi cable on it..
Surf is up!
Depending the card you have, you may also have to make a switch for it to shut it down when you don't need it.. Cards like SierraWireless 3G card supports turning it off from software, but some other cards doesn't.
Soldering these connectors is not a easy task so I'd say this is not for everyone... If you need to do it but can't, try your friends or local electronics shops.. nope, not me..
If you need the parts, follow this topic.
Thanks Packer for the detailed pictures, it was pleasure to work with you!

" Later this year, Asustek will offer a version of its Eee PC mini-laptops with built-in 3G (third generation mobile telecommunications) to compete with rivals that are doing the same, a company representative said.
The devices could be out as early as the end of September in Europe."
Expect bundled operator deals.... I hope they will sold them without operators too..
UPDATE: Blogeee saw it in Computex while back:

3G and netbooks

Yep, 3G is finally coming to netbooks too..
Asus Eee PC 4G has already been sold and subsidised from mobile carriers, but with external usb 3G modems. Now we are getting 3G radios inside the netbooks.
ECS has signed deals with European operators; their G10IL, 10 inch netbook, will be branded and sold with internal 3G modem by October. Their smaller and cheaper J-series will be soon available too.
Acer has 3G option too. Their Aspire One, 8.9 inch netbook, will be sold without the 3G at first, but I wouldn't be surprised to hear some operator deals pretty soon.
Asus has 3G possibilities on their Eee PC 901 and 1000. There is no official info about the future 3G models or deals, but our earlier investigations point to that direction.
VIA is also promoting their OpenBook platform with mobile connectivity options.
In overall this looks really good. Connectivity and lower prices can't be bad for the netbooks.

Asus Eee PC hits Finland with 3G options

Bundled with 3g HSDPA modem and subscription starting at 21.80 €/month..
Finnish operators Elisa and Saunalahti are going to sell Asus Eee PC 4Gs with Huawei E220 for monthly fee.
Asus Eee 4G prices with unlimited 3G connection and modem:
384kbps: 21.80 euros/month
512kbps: 26.80 euros/month
1mbps: 31.80 euros/month
2mbps: 41.80 euros/month
5mbps: 46.90 euros/month
If you sign for new ADSL connection, you can get Eee PC for 12e/month (24 month deal).
Huawei E220 is not as nice as E169 I tested, but E169 will be also available for this bundle as soon as Asus updates their 3G drivers to support it.
Eee PC 4G will be available only with Xandros Linux, Pearl White and with 4400mAh battery.
If you want to have XP on it, you should check my review of it.
As it ships with 4400mAh battery, you can expect about 2.5 hours battery life. If you need more , you should think about buying 3rd party battery for it.
I asked Tom Lindblad, Director of sales at Elisa, about Eee PC 900/901 and the answer was Q3.. so maybe for Christmas.. and maybe other mobile computers too..
Press release, Elisa

LifeBook® U810 now available with 3G HSUPA

This tiny UMPC has been now been updated with 3G HSUPA...
It looks small in pictures, but it's even smaller in real life.
I like this little computer a lot, but there was one thing that turned me away from it: the keyboard is missing many keys, so you have to use combination of keys for many functions. If you can live with that, it can be your for $1299.

Technoviking did it and he is saying:
"I’ve been consistently getting 1.8Mbps down which is quite good. It’s a joy to not have to have any dangle hanging off the device and makes life much easier. I’d highly recommend the modification to anyone with some technical skill."

How to add internal 3G HSDPA to Asus Eee PC

Mobility means mobile connectivity to me. So this had to be done..

I needed to cut 3mm of plastic away here.
and about 3 mm slice from this thin plastic wall.
This is ZadaCOM 3G+ HSDPA modem opened.
After desoldering connectors away I soldered these wires as shown here.

Questions? Comments?
This mod works on any eee pc without the extra pcie slot. ( so it's not good for 8G models ( pcie slot has that 8g ssd drive ) and not as easy on first 4g models with pcie connector in place ( you would need to cut 20 mm of from the pcb to make it fit) )
