3G is GOOOOD!

So pretty simple:

Open it, solder mini pci-e connector and SIM card slot, add 3G card and antenna..

It is gooood now!

As you can see from the last pic, there is plenty or room on other side too... fast usb flash going in soon... or maybe a finger print reader.. or..

nice, wondering is it possible to change p8888 (cdma version) into hsdpa version with original linux o/s? (4g hdd is not ideal for xp or vista o/s in my opinion unless you can upgrade as well)

does your vista o/s has touch screen working now?

I can´t await next new Features.

Very interesting mod!
I waiting for the Gigabyte MID M528 to get this Device with a HSDPA Modem. But i'm still Waiting for this Device - so this mod could be a solution, if the Gigabyte MID don't comes out.
It's realy interesting how many Space left in the Device. Special the space on the Side, where the USB Stick Fits in. There are some USB Stick with 32GB on it. But maybe a DVB-T USB Sticks will fits in there. But is the Device fast enough to handle the DVB-T MPEG Stream?

Where can we source those microstrip antennas? Multiband antennas would be even nicer.

You are using Win XP Embeded, right? Had you found the working touch screen driver?

I'm using xp pro with xpe theme..

xpe going there with ewf and horm when drivers are ok.. so no drivers yet.. hopefully next week..

A thought -- if you were to plug one of the pci-e memory expansion cards into the connector (a la Asus EEE), would you end up with an SSD?

pcie ssds work only on devices like eee and mini9...

the bus is different on those..

Hav you tried open office on this cool device, would love to have something like this with full Word & .pdf capabilities?

Thanks for your reply & excellent work you are doing on this site!

JKK said...

office and pdf apps are on default linux build and work fine in xp too..

i use foxit reader on small xp devices..

Thanks!

Cool JKK! This might just be what my travelling sales team should use!!!

AGAIN YOU SHOW GREAT INSIGHT AND PRO EXPERTISE ON YOUR BLOG!

Would an USB-Dongle with UMTS with pre-packed software work as an alternative for my Team since they already got the dongles anyhow?

Thanks again for your reply!

JKK said...

Thanks!

dongles would work too, but you would need to know how to install them under linux.

unless you would get xp on them..

I have a question. Adding the 3g Card to the device , gives it the capability of what other than mobile internet connection? Can this device be used know as a regular phone with 3g on it? if your adding the SIM card this is what my impression of what would happen. This is the first DIY I have ever looked at so I am just curious.

you get internet and sms..

.. there are also modems with voice but i don't see that as a needed feature.

Thanks again for your answers, I read that a 64 bit Ubuntu could be working together with some 64 bit drivers from Vodafone. Is this linux version a 32 or 64 bit version? Otherwise I´ll guess we have to wait for afully (drivers) working XP version to get the Dongles working.

Your solution is much more handy and elegant though.

hi JKK,
I need wifi , but I didn't have onginal build in wifi xp driver.

I know this MC8775 comes with Wifi together, besides 3G, how can I connect the wifi from this HSDPA card to my aigo MID?
Thanks

JKK said...

8775 deos not have wifi... you have to just wait for the drivers to use the original wifi..

I've just found a Japanese group working on installing XP to Willcom D4. They can use the touch panel driver inside D4's CD in XP. As the touch screen of D4 is the same as P8860 (Ideacom UTS6680). Maybe the driver inside Willcom D4 can work with P8860....

Sorry for missing the link. The page is in Japanese, maybe you will need a translator.... http://www33.atwiki.jp/d4matome/pages/17.html

Great stuff as usual, jkk!

As for putting in 'fast usb flash' that you refer to above, does this mean larger storage space than what Aigo comes with too?

Thanks!

Hello,

If you have an iphone and aigo mid and want easy 3g without any internal mod here are some easy instructions found :

Quote:
"yes it is posible its amzing and quite easy. I have an iphone 3g 8gb and i literlly have internet wherever my phone goes. All u need to do is jailbreak ur iphone if on a mac its easier but like me i did on a windows vista. give me one sec while i give u the intructions http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=1881 folow those simple steps . Once youve done that get on the app called Cydia. Download and install PdaNet on ur iphone. Create an Ad hoc network which is extremely easy. go network . Create a new network selcect adhoc no exceprtion which means no security .. give it a name and then simply go on ur iphone conect to it and run pda net and Wala. Fast free Staelite internet. o and btw ive gotten speeds up to 2.5mbs down. Not slow at all. 3g is incredible"

Have fun...

Ever since I saw the umpcfever dissecting video of the Aigo MID, I've been wondering about the possibilities of upgrading the NAND flash chips and the RAM chips. I don't know if anyone has thought about it. I was looking up NAND chips on digikey and micron chips are reasonably priced in low quantities; you can even buy single chips. I guess the big question is what is the highest density the Aigo MID can handle? And an even bigger hurdle is the fact that from what I could see in the dissection video, the NAND chips are FBGA rather than the 48-TSOP versions which are easier to solder by hand. The RAM chips also appear to be the FBGA versions too. It'd be great to upgrade the RAM to at least 1GB and the SSD to 16GB, 32GB or maybe even 64GB. Just a thought.

where to buy the sim holder and mini pci express connector?

Anonymous said...

hi! i am also after a solution to upgrade the ram and flash modules... i think it should not be a problem to have a professional soldering company do the job of upgrading... question is... would the aigo accept bigger modules?

JK, please post links to the exact parts (presumably through mouser.com) so that people do not order incorrect parts for this mod. Thanks in advance. Davide-NYC
