well... as of today (12/19), MDD says the 128 GB cards are "out of customs and on a truck" and will be shipped out this Monday. :

Hi, just got my runcore 64GB with USB and tested it.

I couldn't say I'm completely happy with it:

On one hand, the speed is amazing, seriously, and that's what we were promised, but on the other, the USB ports are unusable on the eee 1000 without modifying the case and in top of that, the ssd won't fit easily if you don't "force" it a little bit.

32gb version (usb) working super on my 16gb 900 with XP cloned from my old 16gb SSD.

My name is Brunino: I have received my 64GB (for my ASUS 901) one week ago, via UPS. I already installed it as D: drive and inverted the boot sequence in the BIOS.

I wrote and publish a complete reportage in my blog (blog.brunospagna.com) and in the italian forum (http://forum.eeepc.it/) of www.eeepc.it (see "Hardware Interno"). In both sites I have described each step with many photos.

Bye

My 16GB finally shipped yesterday. Made original order near end of October (for a non-runcore ssd that mdd was never able to get in stock), so happy to see it on its way here. Supposed to be here today, but looks like weather is effecting shipments. Can't wait for the 900a to be something more than a toy.

Has anyone successfully loaded one of these (32GB in my case) onto a 900 with Celeron? I have tried 3 different chips, currently the USB C chip, with zero success.

I am on a 900 20G, trying to load XP. It will not work. I just upgraded the bios to 0906 and that did not do the trick.

MDD has been very helpful, but I don't think this is going to work. Celeron is not friendly.

Any ideas?
Thanks
Andy

Hello Andy,

First bought a 32Gb non-USB on November 22 for my 12Gb 900 celeron. But C0 did not work because it was conflicting with the onboard 4Gb. So I returned it for a change. I am still waiting for them to ship the USB one (C).
I was hopeful, but now I understood from what you wrote that it won't work eighter.
Totally dissapointed after waiting for more than one month and spending so much money...

i'm also waiting for someone to test the 64GB(50mm)+128GB(70mm) at the same time on the 901.
Here is no one that have this configuration?

the 128GB is still to expensive and it's better to wait a little. and the 64 from dell seems e better investment for the moment.

Andy, I also have an EEE 900 Celeron 20 Gig Linux, and I had the C0 chip. I now have the USB one (C) that arrived on Dec 24th, and it doesn't work either. It at least shows up as the Slave drive instead of the Master, which is different from the C0 chip. But when I use it, it gives the same errors as before. I've emailed MDD to see what they think.

40 days.
They do not send the replacement.
They do not reply mails.
Never going to buy anything from US again.

I was thinking about the heat issue on my eeepc 900?
Is it the stock SSD that makes this heat?

Does it make any difference?

USB one does not work eighter :(

Just confirmed with MDD - none of the current SSDs from RunCore will work with the EEE 900 based on the Celeron processor, which is the original EEE 900. It's a conflict with the controller. Supposedly a new version not made by RunCore is coming soon, but that is at least a few weeks away. So if you have a EEE 900 based on the Atom chip, you should be okay.

Well have just brought 3 dell mini 9's, from Vodafone so that they came with the WWLN ports. No way to get them from Dell and I don't want to remove the wifi. Have also brought one 64gig 80/40 runcore SSD to test in one of them. The kids should love the small laptops and I'm keen to play with one just to see how it performs - so its out with XP home and on with windows 7 beta 2 gig of ram and a fast SSD - will be interesting to see how it goes. Mines on back order so I guess they have sold out

Thanks JJK for the info on these devices - thanks Phil

I purchased a RUNCORE 32GB SSD AND INSTALLED IT IN MY ASUS eeePC 16g WinXP computer and wow what a world of difference. This is what ASUS should have shipped this model with. It has gone from being unusable to my favorite computer to use now.

Thanks JKK and MYDigital!!!!!

This is not true. I have a Celeron 900 16G WinXP with the new Runcore 32g SSD in it, and it works great!!!

Does not work with the 12Gb and 20Gb versions only. Because they have onboard 4Gb SSDs besides pci-e connector.
16Gb version does not have onboard SSD. SSD is on removable pci-e. 30Gb has HDD connected to pci-e with a zif connector card.

I am thinking about desoldering onboard SSD chips. :)

I've been waiting a month now for my SSD from MDD - useless service, they take your money then blank you when you email them.

Anyone know of another source for these? I'm about to file a Paypal complaint against MDD...

Anonymous said...

Try to contact them via their live chat service (see 'customer service' at their website)

Mmmm, that hasn't been online in weeks. Maybe they've gone bust. Whatever, they give the worst online buying experience I've ever had.

Hi all
I am looking foreword to by a runcore 64 GB for my EEE 901 but I read to another forum that 64 GB runcores crash when hybrid mode is set to powersave under Win XP (this does not seem to be true for the 32 GB devices)
Did you face any similar problems?

".. If you check the links, MDD is listing the write cycle as 10000 times..
.. so if you write the whole SSD everyday it will last "only" 10000 days = 30 years"

JKK, you seem to know your stuff otherwise, but this is a pretty naive statement. Nobody overwrites their whole drive every day, but certain applications can write to the same location very often. What of the page file for example ? If it was always in the same location, those cells would wear out pretty quickly. That's what wear leveling is for, but I'm not sure how efficient it really is in reality. In the ideal case it spread out all writes evenly across all cells, 10K overwrites should be enough, because that would mean you could write 160TB on a 16GB SSD during it's lifetime.
But from what I've heard and read on the web (I've never owned an SSD yet) 30 years is an unrealistically long lifetime expectancy.
Please JKK or anyone else, if you have anything smart to add do so, I wouldn't mind finding out a little bit more about the durability of MLCs and SLCs...

quite a huge problem imho

runcore ssd works absolutely perfect.. below 5 minutes with acronis true image, you save my eee900. Is there a way to use the old ssd inside or outside netbook;

Hey JKK, love your blog.

I have a question for you:
If the pci-e port on my eee-1000 has both PATA and SATA signals, why does runcore ssd-pro (the SATA ones 110/90 MBs) are for 900A, S101 only?
what about 1000, do I have to get stuck with 75/55 MBs PATA? really?
isn't there any workaround like a BIOS upgrade?
or is it just an advertising mistake?
because my lspci reads:
00:1f.2 IDE interface: ... SATA IDE controler (rev 02)

I do not understand why JKK can not replicate the freeze problem when in powersaving mode (with the asus tool super hybrid enging installed, NOT with windows stock powersaving methods).

SHE from Asus additionally turns down bus speed and voltage, and this is something the Runcore SSDs can NOT handle atm.

JKK said...

Anon, I don't have any problems with SHE... Not on 901 or 900A..

JKK said...

maybe SHE issue is related to specific bios version...

I purchased the 32 Gb Runcore SSD for my ASUS 901 on Monday afternoon and it arrived thursday afternoon ( wow very fast service) and after i did a ghost image of my current C and D drive on a external USB hard disk. after that i replaced the 8gb SSD with the new Runcore 32 gb and went into the BIOS and change the boot order of the hard disk.

Then i booted the Asus 901 with an external DVD reader which had a boot CD with Ghost software. then i ghosted my C: drive image in the 32 gb SSD and the 8 gb D Drive ( i managed to remove enought of the D: content to fit in the 4 GB. Once that was done i changed the boot order in the BIOS and booted the Asus 901 from secondary slave drive instead of Secondary master drive. so now the end result is that i have a Asus 901 with a 32 Gb SSD C: drive and a D: rive of 4 GB. After i did that i removed all the software that where installed in the Drive and reinstall some of them to the faster C drive. I also installed Microsoft Office and wow its flying good. the PC is very fast and i love it

Can I replace exsiting hard drive in my HP Mini 2140 with Runcore 64GB Pro IV SATA SSD and clone existing hard drive

JKK, a quick question if you still read this post. At some point the bus speed becomes the limiting factor for all machines. So, the question is, is there any 'real' advantage to going to the faster SSD cards like the pro Runcore? I've seen posts where people replace the SSd with different SSd cards. Some with read/write speeds at 90/55 MB per/sec vs cards that read/write at 150/100 MB per/sec. At least one post says to save your money and go with the slower card as this eliminates the pauses in work and they don't feel there is any advantage to going to the faster cards. Is there, in your opinon, any advantage to going with the faster card? This could save $40.00 on the card. If there is no advantage, then obviously the slower card wins. I bought this computer based, at least partially on your reviews, not trying to put you on a spot, but I'm just looking for guidance on this. You do a great job and please keep at it. The touch screen is, of course, the next upgrade.

mkquist,

you are 100% right. Specially mobilile computer have slower busses.. but thats not all:

perfect exapmle on this video: http://jkkmobile.blogspot.com/2009/05/meet-runcore-pro-iv-really-fast-ssd.html

best is to get drive with best 4k random write.
