Hi Guys MyDigitalDiscount will feature a limited number of Ebay auctions for an advanced pre-production mixture of GB sizes of around 500pcs offered over the next few days. 1st auctions will start at 4PM EST 11/20/08 and ship 11/21/08 for these advanced pre-production units. These units are the same as JKK reviewed lacking the USB Master and Slave feature and only work in specific PC’s.

Is anyone producing an alternative to the primary 4GB disk as well? A bigger one (preferably SLC) would be nice as a drop in replacement.

JKK said...

DjDiff, the Dell one should work on the 901s internal ssd slot... I will test when it's here.. eta is friday to monday...

Anonymous said...

yeah ive been waiting to know when and how to upgrade the internal 4GB SLC drive. i need to be able to hibernate and a 4GB drive is not enough.

Has anyone tried a Dell SSD in place of the 4GB internal in the 901? thanks.

Chad said...

Does anyone know if this works with the Asus Eee PC 701 - (4GB Surf).

Anonymous said...

Hey JKK,

It looks like you got the 64 Gig SSD for you video demo cause the graph data above shows on the Speed test with 64GB and 128GB SSD reaching the + 50MB write and 75MB read. Just want to confirm the part...

RunCore 64GB PATA Mini PCI-e PCIe SSD for ASUS EEE PC 901 and 1000
Part#: RCP-I-M7064-C1

Yes?

Anonymous said...

Does this SSD replace the primary SSD or only the Second. I want a much larger primary SSD and is this the solution?

Anonymous said...

@Chad Smith

I think so, but first, you have to solder the missing mini-PCI-e Slot above the RAM-Module.

Anonymous said...

@jkk

can you explain how hibernate works and how much ssd-space it need by minimum, please.

Thanks

JKK said...

When pc hibernates, it copies the system state from RAM to SSD ( or HDD ). It needs as much space as the size of your RAM is, ie 1GB on my Eee 900A.

When you power the system back, it resumes the state from that file.

When pc is hibernated, it doesn't use any power.

JKK said...

This one I tested ( 64GB on video ) is for 1st drive on Eee 900A or second on 900/901/1000

I'm getting the 50mm one for Dell in 2 or 3 days and I will test it as 1st drive on Eee 901 too.

Anonymous said...

WOW!!!!!!!!
That IS fast!!!!

sabr said...

Pretty amazing prices and speeds. I too would want to replace the OS drive in my 901 if I could.

Anonymous said...

What's the use for the ones with usb connector? what is that for?

All of these are just "bolt-on" stright away for 901 right?

JKK said...

yep, "bolt-on"

usb is good for transfering files, making backups or cloning... I will demo when it's here...

Anonymous said...

Oh man, I paid an arm and a leg for my 16GB SLC SSD just recently...

Anonymous said...

Will I notice difference in speed whilie using the 64gb compared to the 32gb? It seems a little faster in your disc tests?

JKK said...

i didn't really notice difference.. i tried to time the hibernation time and few times got about 2 second difference..

Anonymous said...

okay, howcome the 64gb is faster? isn't it the same controller on them? on mdd they have one 32gb that says 75/55 and one that says 75/44, couldn't your be the 75/44 one?

JKK said...

yep, same controller but different flash... i don't know how, but they are different...

maybe bigger is stronger ;)

Anonymous said...

I really cannot believe a pata device @ 66MHz could ever reach or overtake 66MB/s even in UDMA-6 mode !!
raxy.

Unknown said...

Bummer! Like an earlier post, I purchased an SLC 32GB for well over $300, which was not as fast as advertised. I kept it because it was the best alternative at the time. So I paid an arm and two legs!

Anonymous said...

Hi All, just to confirm will these SSDs be okay to use with the 701 series, which have a working PCI-E connector present within them?

Just need to confirm as I'm running out of space on mine and 32GB replacement would be ideal to resolving this.

Cheers, Scotty Boy!

jkk: THANK YOU!!!

The Dell SSDs are available for order now at:

http://www.mydigitaldiscount.com/CategoryProductList.jsp?cat=Browse+By+Brand%3ARunCore%3ARunCore+PCI+Express+Mini+PCI-e+SSDs%3ADell+Inspiron+Mini+9+PCI-e+SSDs

jkk--You can see pictures of the Runcore parts at:

http://www.runcore.com/prodshow.asp?ID=161

and they have the USB port on them. Appears that the production parts all do? Anyway, the port on the SSD appears to be a FEMALE oddly enough, meaning we'll need a cable to connect it to a USB port. Do you know if this is a USB A or USB B connector?

Anonymous said...

I assume the larger drives are faster because the "sector size" is faster? Maybe the same effect you see with larger hard drives at the same RPM, i.e. the higher density results in a slight improvement in transfer rate.

Any comparisons between the Runcore SSD and the inbuilt Dell SSD ??

Anonymous said...

Are Runcore SSDs SLC or MLC?

Anonymous said...

I imagine that if one wishes to use these drives to get a faster operating system, we have to remove the OS from the "first" drive and put it on this one? That means that the drive on the MBoard is effectively just a 4GB data drive now, right?

Is no other way to modify on the primary SSD on 901 to higher capacity?!?

Anonymous said...

Sure, this looks very good but the key that everyone missed is the memory type: MLC.
How do I know that? Based on the pictures above, we have the memory code.
This explains the price but, as we are used with this types of SSD's, no producer mentions the Write cycles even on SLC ones.
I have an Eee 900 12GB (old model) in witch I replaced the 8GB MLC with 8GB SLC from MDD. I am happy with the performance and I prefer SLC due to the importance of data stored on this devices.

A question for JKK: Did you received an official Write cycle on any of the SSD's for EEEPC?
For me this is an important factor.

Nice review.

JKK said...

TOR, did you see the video? I said they are MLC..
.. If you check the links, MDD is listing the write cycle as 10000 times..
.. so if you write the whole SSD everyday it will last "only" 10000 days = 30 years

JKK said...

Chris, these SSDs work only on Eee PCs and Dell Mini 9.

There is no way to use them on u2010 or in any other umpc as normal pcie slot does not have the IDE bus.

JKK said...

.. but Chris, keep eyes open.. SSD Week is not yet over ;)

This is amazing...this is the advancement that will make SSD really usable for the mainstream...and all from these small players in the industry. At this value, I would be tempted to get one for my desktop. :)

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the review JKK :)

(off topic: so you solved the problem with getting elantecs drivers to work with 900a? and any idea where to buy a cheap 900a in europe (or is it cheaper to import from US (with tax)?)(Sweden doesnt seem to get a lot of the eee's)

Anonymous said...

SSD is a future storage for PC. I think I'll buy one for my 1000h with 64Gb then price will fall down to 100$. I think it will soon. But I would prefer SSD with some more standard interface, not with pcie. Or maybe pcie will become standard port for subj?

Anonymous said...

Hi!
Is there any chance of ssds with controllers like these have but slc versions (that would mean even faster right?) popping up any time soon?

Anonymous said...

Do these MLC SSDs experience the same type of problems that those OCZ/SuperTalent/etc drives do with the JMicron controller? Those are fast, but they deal very poorly with small writes and make for a jerky and stutter-filled Windows experience.

Anonymous said...

Will this work for a Sony TZ? I know they have pretty small hard drives, are these the right form factor?

Anonymous said...

Amazing review. Thanks a lot.

@Anton, if I look at the prices for the older MMD SSDs, it seems that the SLC-Chips/Nands are almost as twice as expensive as the MLC ones. I believe that would be the same with the RunCore SSDs.
But I could imagine too that SLCs with this kind of controller would be very fast.

What I was wondering about is the Part numbers of the SSDs for the EeePCs. There are SSDs of same capacity with a ...C and ...C1 at the end. It says the …C will fit into 900 too. But what is the actual difference between them? Is it just the jumpering?
Just speculating what type would fit into a 901go with originally only one SSD in the 2nd slot.

Marc

JKK said...

Thanks Marc!

The difference is the jumpering and the usb ports on the drive..

.. I will demo the usb functions as soon as they arrive... maybe tomorrow...

Anonymous said...

Will these work in the 901 GO as the only SSD?

Anonymous said...

Anton we tested SLC but it was no faster we think maybe we hit a bottle neck somehow. The MLC is the best choice for sure in this case.

Matt MDD

Anonymous said...

Marc and Inquisitor, I am almost sure that you would still want the part for the 901 because Asus probably just changed the boot order in the bios.

JKK said...

Inquisitor, yes it will work on 901 GO

you should either get the one for 900/900A or the one with usb port ( pre order ) shipping in 2 weeks..

I would venture a guess and say it does not work. Based on mydigital website there is a 1.8 inch zif ssd in the works. I would imagine that will be able to take care of the dell mini 12 and several other devices with 1.8 inch drives.

Might be an excellant upgrade for a dell mini 12.

This is great for the secondary storage and I have placed my order. But how to increase the 4GB primary storage. My understanding is that hibernation must take place on the root drive of the OS. So this will not effect the boot up times or hibernation times. This is were the biggest issues lay. Has anyone made an attempt to increase the 4GB primary storage?

Or are you using the faster secondary storage as the active and primary boot SSD (if possible) and bypassing the primary storage all together?

Anonymous said...

I think the idea is to use the new faster secondary ssd as primary and install os etc on that one. I think all you have to do is change the boot order in bios, am I right?

JKK said...

Anton, yes. Just swap the boot order from bios.

Anonymous said...

should I change the boot order before installing XP to the new ssd or does'nt it matter when I do it?

Anonymous said...

what does mean this:
This drive does not include the Master Micro USB port. The drives currently listed are preproduction prototypes with a limited release of only 250 total pieces. The final version of this product will include both the Slave and Master Micro USB ports like their Asus EEE PC counterparts.

Thanks again JKK,
as soon as you positive tested the ones for Dell-Mini, I'm probably going to put a 16GB into my 2nd slot and a 32GB for Dell-Mini into the 1st slot.
I hope they’re not both jumpered to master. Maybe you could clarify that in your upcoming review (maybe also about the hole modification for 1st ssd slot in the EeePCs)

I own a 901 (no ZIF-Con. on IDE3). The question about 901go and the different part numbers of RunCore SSDs was just curiosity. @steve09er: jkk answered that a few comments above.

I’m glad there is finally some fresh wind going thru the ssd market :)

I hope JKK test Asus EEE PC 901 with RunCore Pro 16/32GB Mini PCIe PCI-e SSD Solid State Drive with Dell Inspiron Mini 9 (RCP-I-M5016/32-C) on primary SSD as OS, because I assume this PCIe PCI-e SSD the only SSD can fit in on 901 primary SSD and other bigger capacity on secondary 901 like SSD RunCore 64/128GB PATA Mini PCI-e PCIe SSD (RCP-I-M764/028-C1).

I'm never a cross people can upgrade such like this thing. No one able to upgrade both capacities for Asus 901 on primary and secondary SSD, they only swap boot order. To me is not good at all. And if they swap it on secondary will not able to detect. Result only detecting one drive. Primary should faster (like SLC:8/16GB) but not bigger capacity then secondary (MLC:32GB/64/128GB) for storage. All drives must be set for virtual memory and paging file for boost performance speed for windows. Anyone know how to upgrade it please let us know and share your tech knowledgeable how to do it. ;)

Anonymous said...

Henrik - The eee pc 16gb has a very slow SSD inside, write speeds of about 12mb/s. Swapping it out for one of these new Runcore SSDs, write speeds of about 45mb/s, will improve the speed of running XP drastically.

Hello JKKMOBILE

We bought 10 Asus Eee PC 900 for our office but the turned out to be very slow.
I saw your review of new super fast SSD (runcore 32 Gb) and I was very much amazed by its speed!!!
But what I do not actually understand is how the new SSD speeds up the process so much, if (windows) all system files are written on disk "C" and in our case we change only disk "D"

so bfore buying loads of them we would like to get a piece of advise.

your advice will be very much appricited!!!
thank you in advance

Hi All,
I have watched the video and read all the comments but sorry to say one thing is not clear to me.
I have a 16GB EEE 900 which has only the 16GB PCI SSD and no on-board SSD. My Question is will both the "pre-production" Runcore, available now and the production version with USB, available in two weeks work as the master drive in my 16GB 900.
Thanks

Reguarding the 900 Q.

Jkk will show how the transfer works but here is a description.

The 900 should only have one drive.

To make this super simple for you, please buy the production version coming in on the 8th for all EEEPC's. That will include a USB cable and have a link to free cloning software on it. You simply attach the SSD to the computers USB port then the Runcore drive will show up under my computer as a new drive you then select it and install the cloning software from the link and clone the drive. Once done, take the old drive out and put the new on in and you will have the same exact computer you started with except 6X faster and more space.

Matt Dawson

Anonymous said...

Abelard, the drive can still be designated as master in the BIOS. Hit F2 and go to the boot order and change it to boot from the secondary spot. It will actually be best that way because the 50MM upgrade for the Asus master slot is about 15% slower than the 70MM part. This is due to the fact that the 70MM has 8 chips while the Dell upgrade has 4 chips.

Anonymous said...

Thanks very much for the above reply!
I'm still slightly confused about 50mm/70mm?
Is the 50MM the pre-production and the 70MM the production with USB?

the smaller one is the "dell" version (should be usable on the primary socket in 901 too), bigger one ist the "eee" version (regular version for the sockets in all eee-pc)

When will the eee 64GB one with USB will be shipping?

Anonymous said...

Hi, my name is Bruno and I have a 901 (4GB + 8GB).
I would like to buy a Runcore 64GB and replace my secondary 8 GB SSD in it.
I don't find in the BIOS how to change boot order of the two SSD: I find only to able/disable them, but in the "boot order" panel there is only one SSD, and I assume it is the 4GB one!
So I assume that in 901 (4GB + 8GB), the Runcore 64GB will only work as a D: drive.

Isn't it?
Thanx in advance, Bruno

Anonymous said...

Hmm strange, you actually should see two identical named SSDs (I believe they both named “ASUS PHISON”) in the boot order tab of your Bios.
Once you hit Enter on one of them you see more details (e.g. which on is the 1st/master/4GB or the 2nd/slave/8GB) and you also should be able to change the order.

Your idea changing 2nd SSD with RunCore one and run it as C:\ boot drive works only if the RunCore is jumpered opposite than the 1st 4GB SSD
(it matters only if you go ahead using the 4GB in the 1st slot)
I my 901 the 2nd needs to be slave.
An answer of MDD on this subject is still outstanding.
That brings me right to another point.
JKK, how is the SSD-Week progress? :)

Anonymous said...

Hi Marc (I'm Bruno).
In BIOS there are two setup:
"Hard Drives" and "Boot order"

In "Hard Drives" you can see the two PHISON (and details like 4GB and 8GB); but in "Boot order" there is only one generic "SSD-PHISON" and you cannot distinguish which is !
This is why I asked if Runcore can works as C:, because I suppose NO. Could JKK or MDD answer us?

Thank you
Bruno

Ordered a 64GB card for my 900 over the weekend, shipped overnight yesterday and installed today. System restore went smoothly and after about half an hour I'm very pleased with the improved speed and lack of pauses when browsing or doing just about *anything* on this little guy. Good stuff!

Hello Bruno, you're completely right. I had the chance to look into my Bios last night, finally.
Under Boot -> Boot Device Priority I can choose only one SSD as well (the SM-ASUS-PHISON).
If you look under Boot -> Hard Disk Drives you can see 1st and 2nd Drive.
1st is the above mentioned SM… and 2nd the SS-ASUS-PHISON.
I hadn’t had the time last night to check that, but what if you try to change the drives in here?
I could imagine, you can choose at the priority tab only that SSD drive which is set to 1st at the Drive tab.
Marc

Anonymous said...

Dear Marc (I'm Bruno),
I tried this experience:
1. I change the order in "Boot>Hard Disk Drives" of both PHISON. I put the SS (Slave) as first and the SM (Master) as second
2. In "Boot Device Priority" now there is the SS-PHISON (Slave) as 'boot device'
3. I restarded the ASUS and: the SYSTEM DOESN'T START ! This means that the slave PHISON (8GB) is now the first device in the boot sequence...

CONCLUSION: I think that if I buy a RunCore 64 GB (or another SSD) to replace my actually 8GB SSD, and I change the order boot sequence, I will have a new system with a primary disk (C:) of 64GB and a secondary disk (D:) of 4 GB.

Obviously I will need to clone the O.S. on the new SSD or to reinstall the O.S. again on the new SSD.

Update from Andy:
Still no luck loading XP with my new 32GB.

I reloaded XP on the OEM Hardware (20g Set) and was able to LOAD XP ON THE D Drive. This is th 16GB drive, leaving the 4GB OB open.

Observation: painfully slow, which is why I'd really like to get the 32GB working.

Again, the install process seems to stall every time when it tries to Start Windows for the first time (after grabbing the initialization files from CD).

Still stumped for now

Will the Runcore also work in the model 701 of the eeePC?

Anonymous said...

My 32GB Runcore just arrived, but I'm having the same problem that Andy described: on an EEE PC 900, the Windows XP installer (tried SP2 and SP3 discs) stalls at "Starting Windows", no matter which (4gb or 32gb) drive I have configured as the first drive in the system.

What's more, the Windows XP installation I have on the 4GB drive will not boot (except in Safe Mode) when the 32GB drive is installed. I'm going to see if I have better luck installing Linux on it.

Brian and all-
I have reverted to installing the default Linux on my OEM hardware. Once done, 4GB SSD has teh OS and the 16GB SSD shows as formatted and completely blank. If I try to install the Runcore (leaving everything else as is), the system will not even boot.

I am back to Square Zero, with default OS on default hardware. I can't help thinking I had a bad chip...

JKK: Thank you for the very interesting information. In one of the notes above, you stated that the card is intended to be the second drive on an EEE PC 900. I have EEE PC 900 16G with XP. It has only one disk, and as you mentioned many times, this disk is very slow. (I don't even know if adding a secondary disk is possible in this computer). Due to the unacceptable speed, I am interested in replacing the primary disk. Do you know how to do this? If Runcore cards can't be used as the primary disks in my machine directly, would you see any potential mods (to the computer or the card) that would make it possible?

Thank you,

-- Peter.

EEE PC 900 16G is just like the 900A i have on the video ( but with celeron cpu ). So you just need to open the bottom lid to swap the ssd. ( open it to see it ;) )

JKK-
Any thoughts on the problems that Brian and I are experiencing?

Thanks again for all of your in work on this platform!

Andy, it might be that you got the wrong ssd...

Just email to mdd and they will send you the right one..

The ones with usb ( all will have usb soon ) will work on any model so these kind of problems will be gone.

does anyone know what the hell that means

Hi folks
I got the 32gb Runcore ssd the other day for my 900 16GB (slow) with Celeron cpu. Replaced the ssd and installed XP sp3 from an external cd-drive. Now I got a hole new pc 900 32GB superfast. It´s a real pleasure to work the pc now. Have a 2 GB RAM installed and with closed virtual memory and disabled system recovery, the 900 now is lightening fast. Thank´s JKK for your exellent work. Hi Guys (and JKK)
I have also just received my Runcore 32GM drive for my 901.
I want to change my 901 so that the OS is on the new Runcore and its assigned as the c drive (not essential but desireable)
There seem to be 3 places I need to change things - the advanced tab has Master / slave settings and it currently has master as asus drive and slave as Runcore. There are then 2 parts in the Boot tab - one specifies the drives and one selects the boot order. I'm confused so could someone post a step by step guide - frankly any help would be greatfully received

Greetings all. I just wanted to tell everyone that right now Ebay is having a 30% cashback (via live.com) on all non-international Buy-It-Now items. I did a search for "runcore" on ebay and all their Mini 9 and Eee PC SSD drives are available as Buy it now options which means you can get 30% cashback. This means $20 cashback on the cheapest drives, and more on the more expensive drives. Here is a thread on fatwallet.com describing the process very thoroughly: http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/hot-deals/838081/

Quick FAQ for those of you that are not familiar with live.com:
Requirements: ebay account, paypal account, live.com account
Waiting time: 2 months for your cashback to be available, 1 week for your payment to process through paypal

Enjoy!

Andy, Brian, I also believe I am experiencing the same thing as you. I have an EEE PC 900 20 GB Linux (celeron), and I bought the 32 GB RCP-I-M7032-C0. I replaced the memory and I noticed that the RunCore shows as "master" in the BIOS and "slave" is the 4 GB, which is fine by me, but it does make you wonder if perhaps the Runcore is "hard-wired" to be master and that this conflicting with the 4 GB. I went into the BIOS and even disabled my 4 GB built in device but this didn't appear to change anything.

BTW, I'm running Ubuntu EEE and the installer complains that the ata2.00 device is not responding, so my initial thoughts were the same as yours - that I got a defective chip. But now I'm wondering if this particular device was not tested thorougly on the EEE 900 Celeron, and only works on the EEE 900 Atom version.

Anonymous said...

Hello JKK,
I was wondering can the Runcore Mini with built in USB replace my 4GB internal SSD.

I would love to hear from you.
Thanks for all the great work. PK

Anonymous said...

i am also having issues like it is conflicting with the ob ssd even if you disable it.

Apparently the 16gb's are delayed, because neither the C0s or the C1s were produced, so expect to get upgraded to the Cs with the usb, those will ship on the 8th.

Hi JKK, can the micro-usb port act as an internal USB connector for bluetooth or GPS for the EPC900?

Hi guys and JKK
I really need your help with my 901
I finally managed to install xp pro onto the d: drive of my 901 which is recognised as the runcore drive. I still have XP home on the c:drive however when I change the drives round and change boot order in the BIOS the system will not boot. It just hangs with a flashing cursor.
If I change the boot order back to start with the original asus SSD, the system boots and asks me which windows version I want to start.
I cant change the master / slave settings in the bios so what do i do
Help please

I think you need to wipe those existing partitions somehow. I did so by re-installing the Asus Linux one time. The next time I went for the re-install of XP, it allowed me to wipe partitions and re set the drives. I don't know if this the "suggested" method, but it seemed to work for me.

Update from Andy:
As JKK suggested, there is a issue with the 900 Celeron (I have a 20g Linux) and the 32GB Runcore that I purchased. The Item # RCP-I-M7032-CO does not work properly.

I spoke with MDD and they are very helpful. I am exchanging my chip for one (arriving to them this week) that is expected to work fine. I opted NOT to get the USB option, which is due on 12/8.

So, now I wait for the new chip. My expectation is that I'll load the Runcore as C: drive and load XP on that.

Thanks again to JKK and MDD (who demonstate excellent knowledge and customer service)

Andy

Anonymous said...

Thanks Andy - I'm not sure I understand how you were able to wipe the partitions. I had to install the XPpro OS to the D:drive and during that process it did throw me back to the blue screen windows installer screens but that also only gave me a D:drive option. I could just format my C drive I guess but I'm not sure if I'd get back in as I thought it was the bios that is setting the original Asus drive as master and the runcore as slave ?

Anonymous said...

@coe62
you have install two windows xp one on c: and the other on d: but when you install it on d: i write on disk c: mbr, that 's why when you change the order on bios, your mbr on the disk d: is clean, there is nothing.
you can use these command but you have to boot on the windows xp installation cd and go to the rescue prompt :
fixmbr c:
if he doesn't work
fixboot c:

Anonymous said...

thanks Phoenix - so if I want to use the d drive version of windows do i simply key fixmbr d: and then format my c drive to get rid oc the old version of xp.

Anonymous said...

before go on the bios change the boot to d:
test with fixmbr or fixboot if that works then you can format your c: drive

Mine's arriving soon, but just to be clear about the general process for getting the most out of it for performance:

(1) Take an image of your current OS on C,
(2) Flash onto new SSD module (wither by mini USB or by installing and then flashing)
(3) Boot into C, add an MBR to D
(4) Reboot and go into bios:
(4.1) change the order of the hard drives
(4.2) make sure the Slave drive is set as boot
(5) Exit and save, watch it load into Win on your new SSD.

That about right?

Anonymous said...

Thats what I was about to do - though I'm not sure how you actually do point 3 - add MBR to D. How is that done exactly

ChazDaddy said...

Actually, thinking about this there's a larger issue....

I don't think we'll be able to close the existing XP O/S onto the new drive because everything on the filesystem will think that Windows should be installed on C...but I think the drive will be assigned D.

This may only work with a complete fresh XP install!?!?

Anyone have any thoughts? How have you got it working?

I'm starting from a working (clean and efficient, want to keep it) EeePC 901 Win XP.

Anonymous said...

Same here...
EEEPC900 12GB(4+8)
does not work.
although I bought the one for EEE PC 900....

JKK, please answer.
Am I able to take out the onboard ssd?
(Cause I cannot disable from bios)
If I can, will the Runcore SSD work then?

ChazDaddy, I have an answer regarding the C / D assignment issue

I managed to install the 32 Gb runcore SSD and clone the content of the 4 Gb master drive (Win XP install) into the new 32 Gb drive by using a partition / disk copy utility

Then I rebooted on the 32 Gb SSD (by selecting it as primary boot drive in the bios or via the Esc key at startup). Win XP loaded but the 32 Gb SSD was assigned the D letter and some programs were not working properly

It is not allowed to change the letter of the system drive under the administrative tool / computer management console. However, I managed to swap C and D letters of 4 Gb and 32 Gb drives by using the registry editor (regedt32.exe) and switching the contents of the keys HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices\DosDevices\C: and ~\DosDevices\D: (please note that this should be done with great care...). After a reboot the 32 Gb was assigned the C letter and all programs were working great

Anonymous said...

I'm with Remy - but this is NOT straightforward but I am not happy hacking my registry. So on my 901 I have uninstalled windows from my Runcore and gone back to using the 4gb drive for the OS and the Runcore for other programs (office etc)
It works and is an improvement but its not why I bought the drive.
JJK (MDD and other experts on this forum) - you are all very expert at all this so please help us newbies with a simple step by step guide to 1) getting the OS onto the Runcore, getting it assigned as a perm C drive and 3) how to make the remaining 4gb drive useful - hibernate space, virtual memory whatever ..... PLEASE :-)

Anonymous said...

What will happen if I install the runcore, I set it as the primary boot device and I make a fresh xp installation on the runcore disk? Will it end up as the letter C?

Thanks

On my Eee PC 900 with 2GB RAM and Runcore 128GB (arriving next week) installed as the boot drive, it seems like Vista Home might work well as the OS, except that Asus hasn't posted any drivers on their website since until now Vista was not a real possibility for the Eee. Will not having a 1GB processor (minimum speed required per Microsoft) slow things down too much and should I stick with XP Pro? Have any comparison tests been done with Runcore drives Vista vs XP Pro in terms of boot speed and program execution speed?

Hi JKK,

Is it possible to reserve the primary 4G SSD after replace the second SSD by Runcore 32G ? That means no need to removal the primary 4G. It's because my netfriend told me that he need to removal the primary 4G SSD, otherwise, the BIOS could recognize it ! Is he get the old model of Runcore ?

your friend broke his computer and now he wants you to do the same to yours!!!

1 install the new Runcore
2 bormatt both SSDs , chnage boot order and
3 then install OS on a new Runcore whith by that time will be Disk С

so the ssd´s with usb is delayed?

A netfriend report that he purchase two piece of Runcorn (a 32G 50mm and a 32G 70mm) install to his 901 (he know how to disassemble it). He find that the BIOS only recognize the primary SSD (32G 50mm) only! That means two piece of Runcorn couldn't install into a 901! Any one encounter the same problem ?

Do the Runcorn SSD with USB ship with the mini-USB cable ? Is it include mini-USB cable as netfriend report that the SSD without the cable at Hong Kong.

JKK, can you advise on Vista Home install?

On my Eee PC 900 with 2GB RAM and Runcore 128GB (arriving next week) installed as the boot drive, it seems like Vista Home might work well as the OS, except that Asus hasn't posted any drivers on their website since until now Vista was not a real possibility for the Eee. As I said before, my netfriend purchase two piece of MLC SSD (one is 32G 50mm for C and one is 32G 70mm for D). He want to replace the original C & D by Runcore in order to increase the storage capacity and performance. He find that the BIOS could only recognize the primary C if two piece Runcore insert into C and D. In case of replace the D by Runcore, the original 4G SLC SSD can be recognize by BIOS. That means 4G SLC + 32G MLC SSD (Runcore) exist at the same time. In case of replace the original 4G SLC SSD by Runcore 32G SSD 50mm, the original D 8G/16G MLC SSD can be recognize by BIOS too. Just want to know that is there someone who encounter the same problem.

ChazDaddy said...

Chef Ken...I personally would not advise installing Vista on anything less than a 3Ghz processor. I trialled it on a 2.8Ghz desktop with 2GB of RAM and it was incredibly slow. Unless you have a driving *need* to run Vista on your EeePc I personally would stick to XP for now. Just out of interest, why are you thinking about Vista instead of XP?

ChazDaddy said...

It really sucks that the SSDs have been delayed...I am torn between appreciating the speedy responses to questions & leaving them negative feedback for not being able to fulfil their promises.

Anonymous said...

ChazDaddy... I like Vista's feature set better than XP's. I know I can get most of what Vista gives me with various XP add-ons and third party utilities, but I've actually found that my other laptop, which runs Vista business (albeit with a dual core 2 Ghz processor) has had fewer OS problem than I had on the same manchine when I ran it under XP. What I HATE about my current 900 setup is how SLOW it runs, as I usually have multiple apps running simultaneously including huge outlook .pst files, but I associate the bottleneck with the slow hard drive and not with the processor speed, b/c even with my 2Ghz machine, when I run under power saving mode it clocks the processor down to around 1GHz - which is not much faster than the 900's processor at full clock speed.

Whenever (an expected) market demand is higher than your product “in stock”, you are rather selling a promise than the product itself. This is risky. I hope Douglas doesn’t risk his market reputation since he seems to care for his customers.

I don't know about the ssds with the usb, but yesterday I received a 64 GB drive without usb (for 900a) and I am installing right now the OS and drivers...It's waaaay faster! It's really fantastic! As soon as I'll finish the installation I will try hibernation...I'll keep you posted!

Ok, I just tried hibernation, it goes really fast, maybe faster than JKK's 900a! I suppose it is because I have 2 GB ram, even if this also means that the system writes 2 and not 1 GB on the hard drive...Anyway I installed XP SP2 not nlited and without any tweak whatsoever (till now...), and I am really happy about how fast it is!

There's a Hong Kong seller on eBay selling the 50mm Dell Mini 9 SSD Upgrade as an EeePC 901 upgrade for the internal 4GB primary IDE drive.

That would be awesome, as it saves all the cloning and faffing involved with currently only being able to replace IDE2.

Does anyone know if this will work? It's easy to say it will on an auction listing, but actually testing it out is a different thing.

JKK, any plans to test this out?

Unknown said...

MDD answered an email I sent them yesterday saying that 32 & 64 GB cards are now through customs, however that 16 & 128 cards are still being held...and there is no news about when they are expected to clear.

I ordered a 16 card, so I'm well un-chuffed! MDD may be in for some negative feedback from me...'tis the season to be a nasty retailer, for sure!

Anonymous said...

I think it is pretty wildly irresponsible on MDD's part. I know customs is not its fault, but you shouldn't sell a product and promise a shipping date, let alone several shipping dates, if you are not sure. Also, send out some update emails to everyone, its crazy that I would have no idea where my drive is if I didn't take the initiative to contact the company.

Anonymous said...

Hi, I was lucky enough to get a 64GB yesterday (in the UK).

Absolutely blown away by the speed!! Using it in my eee 901, I can actually run Win XP and Leopard now.. and they fly! XP boots like lightning..

Going for an Ubuntu/XP/Leopard/Windows Seven quad-boot..

My 901 has turned from a cute linux machine I muck around with sometimes into a little rocket that I can actually use for real work..

Took a long time to get this card but it was worth the wait..
