Viliv X70 UMPC dissected

Many asked these pics so here they are...

Upgrading in mind, SSD is mini zif so there is no room for 1.8 inch SSDs on 3G versions..

I have no info if non 3G versions have the pcie connector there, if not, there is room for 1.8 inchers.

Review video uploading now.. more on the video.

Thank you for the pics.
Is the ram soldered to the motherboard?

JKK said...

Yes, RAM is soldered.

Thanks JKK! Now I am looking for your Windows 7 X70 video you mentioned at the last live event.

JKK, how do you suppose they will get a 128GB SSD in a 3G enabled version like the one offered on Dynamism? Is there a 128GB mini zif out there already?

May I get you to measure the 3G modem for me please? I am trying to see if I can replace it with a ATSC tuner, the Avermedia A317, which measures 50x30mm. Hopefully the integrated antennae will work for digital TV reception in the US.

3g modem is about 30mm x 50mm x 5mm and he connector is mini pci-e..

.. so if u have mini pci-e tuner it should swap fine

Good question on the 128GB SSD 3G option. How will that work?

Hi JKK, i have been reading conflicting reports on the x70's performance with HULU and youtube videos. can you comment on the experience when using hulu on both low res and hi-res 480p?

thx!

Inside, i see an antena, is for Korean TV tuner? Is working in North America? Someone told me if Windows in French, the ram will take longer, because almost words are longer in French! Is it truth? Also, saying if a lot of withe on screen, as snow in winter in a movie, it will drain more the battery charge as if a night scenes in nights. The contrary is truth for printing! A photo with married woman in withe dress cost less to print than the men married in black or color coat. So, bright colors drain more the battery charge i think!

Hi JKK!

Could you tell us, what type of DMB/DVB chip is inside the Viliv? I have one with Win7, everything works fine, the puter is excellent, except the DVB-T tuner, that I cannot see in device manager or else... Viliv support is silent, no info, no driver...

Can we upgrade the memory?

Looking to purchase the 32gb version of the X70.
I really want the 128gb, but the price is just to much.Thnking of getting the 32gb version and then upgrading the SSD when the price has dropped. Is it really difficult to add a replacement SSD?

JKK, is there any truly portable alternative to the X70 horrible ac/dc adapter 'brick'? Doesn't anybody think that its strange dc output design (9.5V/2.84A) is just to f*ck & enslave customers?

César (from Spain)

JKK, my X70 won't boot. After diagnostics, it was determined that the memory is bad. Since the memory is soldered to the motherboard I would like to replace it but don't know what/where to get one. Any ideas. Thanks, Connie
p.s. thanks to your teardown pictures I was able to upgrade my 16G to a 64G SSD! Thanks.

hello,

i've got the identical version but without the 3g modem.
i solderes in a perfect work a 5.2mm mini pci-e connector onto the board.
i plugged in a brand new 3g modem but it wouldn't be detected by windows. the drivers for the modem are already installed. maybe the socket is not powered by default?
so now i see, that your viliv on the picture has a blue wire that is going away from the mini-pci-e connector.
is it possible to take a photo from the 3g-board with the modem and the tape-stips over the blue wire removed, so that i can see, what i need so solder/bridge to power up my disabled mini-pci-e socket?
would be very interesting for many people.

here you can see detailed pictured from my model without the mini-pci-e slot:
http://charliex2.wordpress.com/2009/08/20/viliv-x70-teardown-non-3g-version/

and here is the direct link to the place where the socket should be:

i hope someone can help me!
thanks in advance!

It looks like missing usb fuses after usb pins 36 and 38..

Also you should measure if there is power..

you can see the pins and the way to start here too: http://www.jkkmobile.com/2009/01/how-to-3g-to-dell-mini-9-not-so-easy.html

Hope this helps..

thanks for the fast answer!
i've got not that much know how to find out myself where to get the power. i've seen that there are some "jumpers" descripted with a "+". have they something to do with the power-supply of the socket?

is it possible that you can make some sort of manual or mark the pins on the picture and draw lines to the part on the board where i can get the power from for that pins?
i'm sure the socket is just out of power, else the modem should already be recognized (i tested 2 modems and at least one is (should be) working - not defective).

the socket is fitting and soldered very perfect (wasn't that hard). i already tried to solder it a second time just to be sure and made high definition pictures for zooming and checking the solder-contacts on my computer. everything looks fine!
if i get it working with your help, i will shoot some high quality pictures from it that you can post here!
