Archos 5 with Android 1.6 overview and hacking info

So.. not sure if i like the "soft" fonts and zoom levels on that screen size. New widgets and video fixes seems good. testing more to report on stability.

Here are the links for the goodies:

Easy Market hack with Gmail etc.

Market + All Gtuff

Turn by turn Google Maps (same hack as used on Milestone)

Haven't watched your video yet (I will tonight), but I'm not sure what you mean about the soft fonts. For me, 1.7.33 FW made the fonts much clearer and sharper -- I can read the system font without zooming now, which was difficult before. And the A5A overall runs smoother, quicker, and more reliably. I'm loving it with the new FW.

Hmm are you sure it's not real GPS that does that instant lock-in in the new Google Maps 3.3.1?

I posted a video where it shows how fast it locks GPS in, though I don't know if that is WiFi based location, I don't know how Google would be able to have precise adresses of all the wifi hotspots, I thought only the ISPs have customers exact adresses and wouldn't share that kind of information just to any web company like Google to let them know where hotspots are located to use that for location services.

So my guess is that the GPS actually works great now, I get near instant GPS lock-in indoors here in Denmark.

Can someone explain to me the adb push system commands? When I do the: adb push system /data/test/system command it pushes the files over but then I don't find them on the device after I reboot. Am I using the correct file location or does it vary by device? Any idea why it pushes them but then I don't find them?

I don't understand the soft fonts either. When I updated and ran google maps then selected navigate it installed a voice application so I'm not sure if you would need the turn by turn hack.

After installed the easy Market hack, experienced endless lockup, device was noticably hotter. eventually did a complete format. Lost most of the pre-installed sw.

This is my second day with Archos5, it is not as stable as my HTC Hero, a bit regard.

@JKK Your Navigation Demo was based on data connection what about GPS ONLY ? Maybe using the NDrive Trial?

In case you hadn't seen my discovery in the Archos Fans forum, the Google Navigator seems only to talk via Bluetooth on the A5A. I suspect it may be audible also when the A5A FM transmitter is in use... Haven't had an opportunity to try this yet.

Could this be made to work on the x51 (not x51v) or is there a serious limitation that avoids that?? The x51 doesnt have the mirror mode option, so I dont know if I would get anywhere.

I have had the Nokia N810 for a little over a year now, and have decided to upgrade to an Archos Internet Tablet. I am debating between the Archos 5, and the Archos 43.

The 5 has GPS, FM, can duel boot, etc. The 43 has a faster processor, more responsive touch screen, a camera, Android 2.2, etc. Which would be better for internet browsing, email, games, day to day tablet use.

Also, is there any way to install android 2.2 on the archos 5??
