Unboxing and hands-on with Aigo MID

Joe has been playing with Aigo MID and posted his findings.. Aigo MID uses the same hardware as Gigabyte M528, but it has Midinux OS where M528 has Ubuntu Mobile

Click to see the video and pictures

"I have never play a small X86 device likes this. Compact, Stylish, Innovative and Entertaining.

The Midinux GUI is easy to play, easy to learn and easy to use (Hahaa~~). Most of the application you need may find in this small device.

The Intel Atom Z500 is not a high performance processor but seems work smoothly in Midinux (and Windows XP). All the thing govern my orientation to get one is the price!!"

6 cell battery extends a bit..

Bright and sharp screen..

No heat or noise and performance feels good... but it ran at 792Mhz and didn't use the full 1.6Ghz even on load.

Note that even the keyboard is wider than on Eee, the key size is only 1mm wider...

$500 MID will cost you 1500 dollars! Something must be wrong

Yep, Intel said that the target price for MIDs is $499.. How come the first price we see now is $1500? Is it Origami again?

First reseller is now listing Gigabyte M528 MID at their site and all the features are looking good as expected but the pricing looks unbelievable..

1,549.00 AUD.. $1450 US... 941 Euros.. 750 UK pounds. !!!

I really hope this is just a mistake.

UPDATE: Moaning helped a bit.. Price just dropped to 1199 AUD.. Still long way to $499

Microsoft bans touchscreens on ULCPCs! WTF!

This is the most stupid thing ever coming from Microsoft!

"Microsoft plans to offer PC makers steep discounts on Windows XP Home Edition to encourage them to use that OS instead of Linux on ultra low-cost PCs (ULPCs). To be eligible, however, the PC vendors that make ULPCs must limit screen sizes to 10.2 inches and hard drives to 80G bytes, and they cannot offer touch-screen PCs."

Microsoft will sell XP Home for $26 to $32, but only if the devises are "not too good" The price it self is really good news but the limits are not.

Limits:

CPU: Up to 1GHz single-core, Via C7-M up to 1.6GHz, Intel Atom N270 1.6GHz
RAM: up to 1GB
Screen: No bigger than 10.2 inch, No touch
HDD: Up to 80GB

I could agree some of the limits... but no touch?? Does Microsoft really think it could eat Tablet PC sales? Or UMPC sales?

We don't want Vista on the small and mobile computers as it does not work on them!!

The worst thing is that this could actually effect on touchscreens overall..

It might make oem to not make touch at all as they may not want to make different devices for different OS...

So if a small MID has super cheap price and touch it can't have XP now?

Just plain stupidity!

UMPC as a daily workhorse

As I use my UMPC at work every day, I can easily relate this user review.

"a device you’ll end up carrying every day with you needs to be light so it won’t weigh you down but also small enough so you can put it in a small bag"

Asus Eee PC 900 screen on 701

Hacking the Eee PC 900 has started...

While I was doing some testing, I remembered that some of you have asked if you could use the new 8.9 inch screen on 7 inch model.

..so the screen works, but bios needs to be hacked for full screen image.

..and you would need to modify the housing quite a lot.

More coming soon..

It looks small in pictures, but it's even smaller in real life.

I like this little computer a lot, but there was one thing that turned me away from it: the keyboard is missing many keys, so you have to use combination of keys for many functions. If you can live with that, it can be your for $1299.
