Eee PC 901 to have 7 hour battery life?

They also confirmed that 900 will coexist with 901:

"The news published by DigiTimes is not true. Eee PC 900 and 901 have characteristics and different target sales. Eee PC 900 weighs less than 1Kg; Eee PC 901 will have a battery capable of reaching 7 hours of autonomy. Both models coexist to meet the needs of different categories of users. "

My calculation:

We have seen that similar devices are using 8W/hour on average use.
If Eee PC 901 has 5800mAh ( 43Wh ) 4 cell battery, it could reach to 5.4 hours.
If Asus uses cpu downscaling like on 900, it could reach to 6 hours.

6 hours in real life is good for 7 hours marketing figures...

Now I wonder, since the 901 is a different beast, perhaps this is when Asus obsoletes the existing EeePC batteries. Perhaps this one has a larger battery bay, hence more cells in the battery, hence longer run time?

That certainly is impressive. Let's try and have a pre-emptive reality check though. Asus claimed a 3 hour battery life for the 900. JKK claims the 900/5400mAh with standby at 10%(S@10) disabled it reached 2h18m. In reality as JKK claims and shows with S@10 off it increases the life by 40-50%. So if we take that 40% (best case) out of 2h18m we are left with about 1h30m at full load. So battery life is in reality only 50% of Asus' claim if it’s at full load. If we apply that to the claimed 7 hours on the 901, at full load it will live for about 3h30m. Now if we look at the test data for the 900/7800mAh we see it gets in reality about 2hours (3h23m minus 40%) at full load. Now if the 901 is released with a 7800mAh as standard AND they have resolved the S@10 issue then it’s 3h30m real battery life at full load would compare to a 3h20m on the 900/7800mAh with S@10 off. That would be a difference of about 5%, which is about the difference the atom should make. So if the 901 is released with high capacity battery and the S@10 bug is gone then this seemingly ridiculous claim of a 7hour battery life is in fact exactly what we would expect out of it.

I'm happy that the 900 and 901 are going to co-exist. I love me some 900... but 901? Not a big fan of its design.

I want to buy a minilaptop in June, but I'm not sure witch one..
I like asus eee pc 900, but maybe msi wind or hp mini-something is better. What would you suggest?

I don't really get all the hype around the atom. The processors in the 900/700 are low power drawing already. I really would expect that display and wifi are the biggest culprits (it would be cool to see someone really test individual components). Unless the atom includes a perpetual motion device I don't see it being substantially better.

I doubt it would be much better refined than 900 either. They were only released a month apart, too soon for Asus to get feedback and change design/production features. I reckon the 901 will be a 900 that has a few extra bells and whistles (blue tooth, some shiny new buttons etc), slightly improved battery life and a higher cost. A bit like a new car with all the optional extras as standard.

P.S. I have already pre-ordered a black 900 here in Australia (they are apparently made of unobtanium), so I AM trying to talk down the 901 to make myself feel better about not waiting for them :D

This is an excellent tricky answer approach from Asus. As Jkk mention 901 will have more cells, which means more weight. So the statement 900 is for another target sales, is for the mobility you will have with less weight and for the people who use there laptop on the road for an hour or until they get to their office, where they can find electricity.
On the other side 901 will be over 1kg providing more autonomy. I believe the laptop will be the same thing with Bluetooth nothing more nothing less under my opinion. Asus is clear that by having 700,701,900,901 models sold together (and trying to have the same price) will be difficult. One MODEL EEE Asus please!!! You started to look like Microsoft with all the various VISTA editions been the same with other tag names and prices.

Actually if the 901 comes out at about US$650 then between the 700 and the 901 you have quite a range of umpc's ranging from $300 to $650. That's pretty cool.

As a physicist, I have to quibble with the units you used in the post. Watts are units of energy per time, so it should be "similar devices are using 8W..."

And the battery capacity is 43Wh, not 43W/h.

To get the total run-time, you take the capacity divided by the power and looking only at the units, you get Wh/W = h, which is what you wanted to find.

you are right about the units.

however, it is just so much more easier for nontech people to understand that someting can deliver or than something uses x amout on energy in an hour.

people allready talks about mAh when they talk about the capasity of the battery, without telling the voltage.. even oems do that all the time..

so thats why i use unit like this here.. to simplify.

Energy Unit is 8W*Hr

8W/Hr is the wrong unit. Watt is energy/time. Watt/Hr is energy/time^2 which is nonsense.

Is it going to use 80W of power after 10 hours!?
