hi JKK
how come you didn't get yourself the Eee901?
is the atom CPU not more advanced than the 900 Intel Mobile CPU?
how do you see this difference?

JKK said...

I actually have 901 coming... for testing.

... but I like 900 more, as it's lighter and better looking in my eyes..

.. with 900 i can choose whether to use 4 cell or 6 cell batteries.

And don't need better cpu.. mobility is the main feature for me.

i have read somewhere the 903 will have the specification from the 901, but have the look of 900. is this an official note from Asus?

Nothing official about the specs of 903,l just the pix:

I agree with JKK on 900 vs 901, in fact I would've stayed with the 701 when it comes to size but the 7" screen is just a little too small (mainly due to resolution actually).

I feel that the original EEE idea isn't there as much with the newer larger and more expensive EEE models. The 16G 900 model for $399 however is very much following in the 701 footsteps I feel! I would've not minded to get the 16G vs the 20G edition I have for a $150 less of a price tag! For $150 I could've added my own mods :)

I also agree with Jkk, every EEE Pc is becomming bigger and bigger the 900 is after the 700 the most portabele.

However, one must take into account the improved battery life of the 901. Personally, better battery life weighs more than a few hundred grams more weight and a slight increase in size.

Unknown said...

Not saying that the 1000 models are justified. They are simply too big and look bulky. 901 is my limit.

JKK said...

901 has bigger battery than 900... 4 cell vs 6 cell...

..and I have even better battery on my 900 ( 6 cell 7800mAh )

.. so my 900 has better battery life ;)

.. and I can buy new batteries for $30 to $50

but yes, 901 is better for some.. 900 is better for me.

JKK: I had the same thoughts. 900 looks much better and if you have the Mugen battery with 7800mAh, it has superior battery life.
...but then the 901 arrived. Hmmm, yes, the 900 still looks better but:
- 901 is not that much bigger than the 900
- without WIFI much more than 6h battery life
- with WIFI about 5h battery life like my 900 with the Mugen battery, maybe a bit more
- really a performance boost!
...and finally i built in a fast Samsung 32GB SSD now and 2GB RAM. Not a desktop replacement but hey, much more than just a small mobile device :o)

chs, yep, 901 sound way better for you!

I too like it, but again, on my use/needs 900 wins ;)

I will be testing the battery life etc on 901 next week so you will see then one to one many times....

jkk --
I have a 4G Eee 701 and will be taking it soon on a 3-week trip. I was thinking of byuing one of the 7800 Mugen batteries you tested. It seems great -- the only thing I'm worried about is safety. Don't want it catching fire on the plane or anything. Should I be concerned about that? Are the Mugens safe?

About your superior battery JKK, isn't it probable that it will work on the new Asus 903? As far as I've seen, it has the same shell.

Oh, and that battery of yours; it doesn't stick out like some others I've seen, or does it? So fugly to have some bloody cylinders sticking out at the bottom of the PC.

Hey JKK, you said above you get a better battery life with a 7800 mAh battery on 900 than 901's battery life, is that right?

What's the maximum battery time you get on your 900 (with 7800 mAh)?
And how many time doing web-browsing, wi-fi on, music listening, etc?

I'm looking forward to see your tests between the 900 and 901!

Cheers mate. :¬]

Can the 900 take another gig of ram and a larger SSD card like CHS did with his 901? Is there a tutorial? Also, does the CPU run the speed that it's clocked to run at or is it slowed down like some of the earlier eee pc's.

YES! YES! YES! Thank you Asus. You finally got the message. $400 Bucks. YES! YES! YES! Thank you! That's all we wanted. Excellent. Good stuff.

I don't understand what a 16G 900 means. The Linux version of the 900 has 20G! Are you saying that the 16G is one complete drive, rather than having the separate 4G drive for the OS like the Eee's do?

Anonymous said...

Over at umpcportal, forum member bevo received the $399 16G 900. The 4 GB fast SSD is gone, leaving you with only the slower 16G SSD. Also, the battery is a 5200 mah instead of the 20G's 5800 mah (US/Canada model). So not only will it take longer to do the same operations, you'll also have less battery time to do it!

Also, the 20G 900 is now available in the US and Canada with a manufacturer's rebate of $100, bringing down the total price to $450. So for only $50 more, you could have a much better computer.

This is getting way too confusing and costly!

Anonymous said...

A quick correction. The $100 rebate is available only in the US. The rebate form initially indicated it was applicable to both the US and Canada, but the terms and conditions indicated the offer is available only in the US.

i heard the ssd is slow. but im wondering if its only slow on the linux version. would the xp version have the same slow ssd? or would it have a faster one since they are pre-installing xp on it??

I just bought one yesterday. Model EEEPC900-W047, white, 16GB, 1GB RAM, Linux. It worked flawless.

I got it from Buy.com so there is no shipping cost either.

This is the sweet point of the EEE PC. For a machine mainly a portable surfer, video player and emailer, a Celeron M (actually it is a under clocked old Pentium M) is more than enough.

Here is the buy.com link for anyone interested in one.

I've had my 900 pearl white 16g for a week and love it. Has 5200 battery and been getting 3 1/2 hours; about 60% of the time I've been on Internet with wifi, rest of the time typing documents, trying out webcam and other features. Screen feels WAY larger than 7-inch, plus I've upped the font size, so it's totally comfortable to use. Am struggling with the lack of Mac compatibility, particularly since I don't know how or if I can put my iCal on the Asus. But if you're a PC person, you'll have zero complaints!

I just got a Eee 900 16G. How much ram and how big a SSD card could you up grade on this model.

Anonymous said...

@JKK: "..mobility is the main feature for me.."

Agree. That means no larger screen then 9" (~1kg). Unfortunately the keyboards of the 90X/1000 are of less quality then the MSI (confirmed in many reviews). Next September MSI comes with the 8.9" Wind :-)

OMFG MY ASUS IS SLOWER THAN MY 5 YEAR OLD BROKEN COMPUTER!!!
I don't have the ee whatever you guys talk about I have the one one for sale for 800 dollars and even with 16 gb something and 300 gb memory it sucks. tried to play a game and 5 min inside it the whole computer froze. this freeze has happened inside the game up to 3 times in a hour and it won't happen more because the computer needs like 25 minutes to be loged on before it allows itself to auto connect to my network. my tip is NEVER buy an Ass pc... ever. asus as the name is just a portable ass, it's made for dumping and costs 20 000 times more than it's worth. I would not even used this thing for fire in my oven it is just worth to low.
