Windows 7 on Viliv S5 UMPC

My Installation notes:

Have USB keyboard ready as you will need it ones.

Plug in dvd or usb stick with W7 media on it.

Open BIOS, choose your media as first boot drive.. boot from it.

Continue with Windows installer.. You can use S5's joystick as mouse and OK key as left click by pressing menu key for few seconds. You need to unplug the DVD drive or USB stick to enter your name with USB keyboard... just swap back after typing.

Drivers and software:

All drivers are XP drivers from Viliv..

Install Atom IO Control first.. Device manager.. Action.. Add legacy hardware .. point to location.

Install S5 System software... Reboot later..

Install touch screen drivers.. Device manager.. Ps2 Mouse.. point to location.. choose Vista driver and reboot.

Copy Viliv Manager to desktop, run it and enable Wifi with it. Wifi driver instal fails.. go to Device manager.. SD8686 on network adapters.. Update driver.. point to location..

Connect wifi.

Start windows update, pick Intel graphics and Wifi on optional updates.. install.. wait...

Install chipset drivers.. with XP compatible as administrator.

Install USB Client drivers.. with XP compatible as administrator.

reboot

Enable bluetooth from Viliv manager.. drivers install automatically

Install GPS drivers.. Device manager.. Action.. Add legacy hardware .. point to location.

All drivers seems working fine and there has been no real issues other than a bit slow operation time to time.

It's really bad from Microsoft that they don't understand that we would like to use full tablet features on touch devices too... a simple "enable all tablet features" would be super...

Next up on S5: SSD and 3G stuff

James Kendrick from JKONTHERUN reported not being able to use the touch screen in portrait mode, was his installation incomplete or are you seeing the same problem

JKK, we need your assessment of adding 3G BEFORE Dynamism's sale starts on May 14! The mod described on umpcfever seems well out of reach of most people!

You should be able to make windows 7 think the S5 is a tablet pc though a registry hack as described here:
http://micropctalk.wetpaint.com/page/Inking+in+MS+Office+2007+With+Vista?t=anon

You may also need floattip from http://www.tweaks2k2.com/binfiles/floattip.zip

Those files are for xp/vista but should work on windows 7.

riyadc said...

Here is more info on the floattip file

Windows XP Tablet PC Edition will only activate the pop-up TIP icon for accessing the user text input panels on PCs with an active digitizer pen due to a conflict with the TouchKit application that drives the touch screens on the UMPCs. There is, however, a freely downloadable utility called FloatTip that will re-enable that functionality.

You can download the application from here, unzip the floattip.exe file and place it in your startup folder. Restart your S5 and you should find that the pop-up TIP now functions as intended.

jkk can you install these two files and see if they work? I dont have a s5 yet but should be getting it from dynamism tommorrow.

Nor rotated touch or floattip are working...

I have used floattip on other umpcs.. seems it doesn't work on 7

pretty silly for MS to only install touch bits on active digitizer tablets especially considering production of active screens has almost completely stopped.

its an overpriced dead technology that wont even exist by the time Windows 7 lifespan is over with.

@citivolus

I don't think you have an easier option. You have to solder a Mini PCIe Socket and route an antenna beside replacing your Zif HDD with SDD.

But what is still not clear to me; Does the Viliv has anything but the Zif socket and the un-available Mini PCIe Socket?

Cause if this is the case then the only option is to install the SSD using the zif socket and one of the RunCore Mini Zif SSD that were designed for the Mini HP? and that is not the fastest SSD and you would be sacrificing your current 64GB HDD for 32GB SSD unless you want to pay $220 for the 64GB SSD.

I would use my Nokia hspda through bluetooth whenever I need to connect since my mobile is always in my pocket anyway.

I am waiting for the MiFi to launch on Verizon them my soon to arrive S5 will have mobile braodband without the mods.

Anonymous said...

I think it is a pity active digitizers have not taken up on UMPC.
While I think for UMPC it might be better to have a touchscreen(capacitive would be nicer) but it would be nice to have the best of two worlds with mixing these 2 technologies into the same machine.

This install created a 100mb system partition and then wouldn't allow it to be installed in the 50 or so gig partition. This is even after formatting it. I gave up and restored it.

I change the hard drive with 1.8" 64GB Zif SSD. Changing and Installing Windows 7 was bit difficult but everything went well. When I started to install viliv manager and other viliv utilities, the bug started to coming out. The error message was "This program is only for viliv product" What can I do to avoid this error. Your advise please

JKK, so does the touch screen rotate now? I have been waiting to see if that would get resolved. I tried installing Windows 7 again, after seeing the new video, but I am having trouble getting it to boot off the flash drive. I installed it from within XP, but I cannot get it to accept my drivers. I decided to restore XP, and start over creating the flash drive and getting all the drivers again. (I may end up purchasing a DVD so I can install from a DVD if I cannot get it to boot from the USB drive.) As I was reading through the comments I saw that you had commented that the rotation was not working properly. Was that before the latest video? I got the impression from the video everything was working properly. I would rather not fight the machine to get Windows 7 installed, only to take it off anyway because of the touch screen not rotating.

Having the TIP running does not mean too much. The fact is that W7 does not see the touch screen as a digitizer. The touch screen was made by eGalax and it seems to me that we have the same problem here than with the old Samsung Q1. To fix that I got the help of eGalax with a HID beta driver. May be installing this driver fix all this. I´ll check it today when I get back home.
