Modding Viliv S5: 3G and SSD

So.. You can upgrade the HDD with any 1.8 inch 5mm SSD or HDD with PATA zif connection or any half mini zif SSD ( I'm getting some new ones to test next week )

..or upgrade with 3G modem but then you need to solder the pci-e connector, antenna cable and use Novatel EU850D with SIM holder.. cut the metal plates and take away the HDD and replace it with half mini zif SSD.

..or wait until 3G version is available ( I have no info yet )

Hi Jkk

Sorry for asking this again but do you know if its possible to install a 8mm hdd? I know you said 5mm but maybe theres enough room for 8mm??
Would be grateful if you can let me know that's the only I need to know before buying it!

Cheers
Flam

JKK said...

Sorry but no.. there is room for only 5mm drives

Does the S5's own wireless/3G control application detect and support the Novatel or any other 3G card model apart from the original Huawei?

JKK said...

Yes, I tested it of course.

Ok thanks for the fast answer! One last tr;-) If you cut out a part of that silver metal piece like for the sim card holder would this free up 3mm?
Sorry for all the questions!

do you have any modding videos of the original Q1 Ultra's (not the thick heavy Core Solo versions)? do you by any chance remember what kind of HDD connector it used?

i only ask because i just recently acquired 1 for cheap & want to shove in an SSD, but the Origami forums are now closed!

JKK said...

Nope, you can't get 3mm by removing the plate.. only about 1mm max

Q1U has same HDD as this S5..

Do you know where I can download the Viliv S5 drivers? I'm thinking on installing Windows 7 but I can't seem to get into the korean viliv support because of login, and the USA site lacks any files for now =(

will the RunCore Pro 64GB Mini PCIe PCI-e SSD Solid State Drive work in this device??

Are you better from the flu JKK?

Do you think it would be possible to use the mini PCI-E header to add a (sorely missing) webcam/mic to the S5?

Were you able to see if there was room anywhere in the front of the casing?

I got in on the Dynamism preorder and can't wait to get mine! Your videos have been awesome. Thanks jkk.

My question Jkk is there any software that will allow you to send and recive sms/mms messages

Got my Viliv S5 and I am wondering Why this umpc with Atom 1.3 seams to be faster than my Eee 901 with Atom 1.6 ?? I wonder!

Is it or it is only my immagination!

Here's a silly question, but suppose I buy the HDD version and replace it with an SSD as shown. How do I get the Window OS onto the new (blank) SSD drive? If I could connect them to a 'normal' computer I'd just use Norton Ghost or something, but I don't think 1.8" drives can be connected to 3.5" SATA controllers for example??

Assuming I buy the HDD version, and then replace it with a (blank) SSD, how exactly do I get Windows XP onto the new drive? I don't think I can use Norton Ghost or anything like that since I don't have any other device I could connect the drives to???

I know this article is kind of old, but any one who searchs for Viliv S5 and SSD will likely find this page.

As far as I understand, Viliv S5's default HDD is the same one in the Raon Everun note. And from what I have seen people have only installed MTRON MOBI SSDs which only goes up to 32GB.

From the pocketables forum there is a thread there where they tried to use a Kinspec zif SSD and a 128GB zif HDD, both of them failed.

So be wary of trying to do this.

Aparently i was late for class!;) I need to ask, is there any possibility to upgrade ram? I know it is soldered...

Hi,

I bought an Viliv S5 from ebay but looks like the hdd has gone; it shows 7gb then 60gb then 0gb and sometimes none. So do you think it is the hdd or has the previous owner possibly corrupted the partitions? are there any good hdd checking tools.

Thanks

So which SSD does JJK use in the video? The MTRON MOBI?

I'm curious to know if you can go from a 3G version down to a 1.8" HDD version without taking off the mini pci express connector.

Hi JKK:
Thanks a lot for your video.
Several question here
1 SDD model? And where to buy?
2 The SIM CARD PCB is made by yourself or you buy from someplace?
3 I found the SIM CARD link port in the mainboard, but his port has 12pin, the SIM CARD PCB only has 6 pin port, how to map?

Anonymous said...

can you add an SD card reader to the villiv S5?

Anonymous said...

Hi.
Could you send me a image of the circuit that's hidden below the rubber pad under the HDD?
I'm trying to use the mini pcie slot. But my s5 doesn't have one. So I'm going to solder a mini pcie slot on my s5.
In order to do that, I'd like to see the circuit design of 3g included version of s5.
I only need the magnified image of the pcie region, with the 3g modem taken out. So I could see the diodes if it is missing from my non-3g s5.
my email address is miauk3@gmail.com
Thanks.

Where I can buy the Novatel EU850 w/ SIM holder, antenna & pci-e connector?

I have a 3g model witn a 32 GB SSD, and i would like to upgrade to a bigger SSD, where can I get a 128 (or at least 64) GB Mini Zif SSD?

JKK said...

U can fit 128gb there but runcore has 64gb half zif ssds

DavidXanatos said...

Does this mod realy work on final units?
I took a look in myne 3g for adding a mic and beter wifi.

And in place of the DBM tuner the 3g vbersions have a DC-DC vonverter suplying the modem directly form the battery.

Thos i'd argue that non 3g version without the Mini PCI wont have the 3.3V on the port even after you add the socket yourselve.

How to remove the original SSD?
I wanted to upgrate it to a 64 GB runcore.
But It seams the original SSD is fixed with some double sided adhesive tape.

How do I remove it properly?

Vadim said...

Hi JKK, one more question about the SSD.

What if you were to remove the SSD casing, how thick is that? any chance to gain ~2 more mm?

Also, will you be getting the new X70 with 7?
Really curious on what modding can be done.
