Dell Mini 9 gets reviewed and upgraded

Joanna has been testing out the new Dell Mini 9..

They reviewed it and upgraded the RAM to 2GB..

.. but what intereted me the most is the fact that the 3G card slot is still there and you can even see the antenna cables.. so upgrading 3G HSDPA would be super easy.

SSD is also now confirmed as STEC PCI-E Mini Card with 85/25 read/write ( not tested )

Remember that often OEMs take a way those options from the retail products and lock bios to only use their hardware...

So let's wait for first end user tests before jumping too much..

Check the review..

what a silly review, there are more things wrong with the Dell than i can even count & she barely mentions any of them. instead focusing almost completely on it's "positives". then even recommends it over the Acer?!

i guess thats how it works when you are 1 of the few Dell trusts to give a preview unit to, you are guaranteed a "good review".

@Anonymous do you a unit for yourself and have you previewed the unit yet? If not, zip it up. It was just released. How would you know what's going on by just seeing (if that's the case)? Give it rest and let's wait to see what others have to say.

well i've ordered mine and it will ship out on 9/19/08. xp, 16G SSD, BT, 1.3 cam, Black. Main use will be video chat to keep in touch with my son overseas. i like the small size, comparable with the eee 901 and slightly lighter with the 4cell battery. Plan on taking it everywhere i go. BT to cell phone for internet use when out of range of WiFi.

not a silly review at all...

I still can't get past that dreadful keyboard layout. Last I checked...the keyboard was used for typing, and I don't peck away at keys with two fingers so the Dell is not for me.

I dont like the keyboard layout too. Dont no why they do it in that way. And the Display is glossy i think, no good choice. Just waiting there will be coming more devices this autumn.

Can anyone tell whethe the Dell already has a SIM card slot built in or whether the 3G modem would need to hold the SIM card?

You can't put HDD there... no room for 1.8 or 2.5 inch drives.. only pci-e SSD fits..

how much it costs?
for example, a 32 or 16gb pci-e ssd fits??
thank you for your attention

1) How much space is left on 4GB after Ubuntu install?

2) Is it confirmed the SSD will not be the slower ones like the Acer Aspire (Linux version) and that one Asus 900 16GB model have?

3) How hot do they get? I heard they don't have a fan?

I went to pricewatch.com and couldn't even find a pci-e SSD. I just ordered my 9 tonight and a 2 gb upgrade of ram. I'll let you guys know how it works.

If someone is going to solder on a mini PCI connector to the board and add a WWAN card, please post the details of the process. I'd like to follow them and find a way to get that upgrade done myself.
