I can't imagine XP with 8GB of disk space. The $399 version looks interesting, but .3MP abeam is pretty funny. I suppose the extra $50 would be worth it for the RAM & better cam. One could then install Ubuntu.

you know they should really sell computers with no OS, it should be like an add-on/optional... cause its really a personal choice for everyone. I don't like Dell, but this doesn't look too bad.

hum and there suppose to compete with who? More storage better cam and can some one standarize air card slot. not enough storage and im sure if you modify it, it will end your warranty. eee 901 or acer aspire 1 better choice . i do not think they will many since there are way better choices now. maybe if they came out with this a year ago it would fly but too late.

there is also another netbook with atom, 120 hhd, 1.3 mp and win/xp. it has a 9in screen too. its the acer aspire 1 (in case dell is reading).

A bit too expensive for what it has. Nice to see it with Ubuntu though, and not some half-assed fork of a marginal distro.

Been waiting and waiting for the Dell, but couldn't wait any longer, so couple of weeks ago I pulled the trigger on an eee pc 1000h. Now that I see the Dell, I'm glad I didn't wait!! Only 8 gb hd would be an immediate no-go. Dell sure blew it!! Could have come in with a full featured netbook and cleaned up the market, but instead they have matched the low end of the market. What a disappointment!

Actually both linux versions are right in line with what i am looking for in a netbook.
I think i may go with the 8 gig version. All i need is the standard ubuntu install and wine so i can install e-sword... small lightweight and ideal to take to the coffee bar for casual surfing ... or to take to church ant take notes. I think one may be comming to me soon.

OK, Dell is a wash out.

Next in line - Lenovo.

give me 2 gig of free space then i will be happy to pick one up.

If you are thinking about going with the 8GB edition, I'd suggest you spend the $50 and get the Windows XP version. Double the RAM, have XP for compatibility, and dual boot with Ubuntu you install yourself (or any other linux distro you like). Spend some money on a good USB flash drive (or USB HDD) and transfer files there, and all is good.

*sigh* But still no bootable eSATA port. :(

I find it funny that the final max spec has yet to be released and people are already poopooing it. What happens if what your seeing in the adds is the low end and for a bit more you could max it out with a 16 gig ssd and 2 gigs of ram? I will just wait and see what the site says tomorrow.

I think too expensive, but wait until it is opened up by jkk ;-) and then think about.

it actually already is official(ly a dud)

We have jkk to open up netbook and show us what is actually in it. Then we can decide better for ourselves. There is an article on the most ideal netbook a while ago on this website and it is good to take this and compare to what are to come. However there is only a narrow margin of pricing to play with for new comers ie from $350 to $600 beyond which will be competing with normal notebook.

Looking at the UK price and i see £279.00 for 16gb sdd, 1 gb ram, 1.3 mega pixel, xp. but worried about the battery 4-cell 2200AHr Battery. could have been better but i like the spec.

Dell's UK site has it listed, yes. But it's at £299.

As for why the makers of UMPCs insist of putting that silly litte webcam in there, I don't know.

..and Dell's Germand and French sites both have it listed at 369 €. In comparison, the UK version would be just one or two euro less - so the same.

For some reason, I'm just not inspired by the design...

You get a pretty crappy deal with the Ubuntu version, I don't understand why that is.

Can I use an air card with dell mini or how about tethering to i-phone while on vacation for bigger screen

I'm vacillating between the Dell inspiron 910 and the Acer Aspire One.

The Dell is said to have an instant on feature that could make the difference for me. I assume that's Linux on the motherboard, perhaps with Firefox easily available as part of the instant on. If that's the case, I'd love it. Instant on with Firefox would suit me most of the time, and I'd boot into XP on those rare occasions that I need Windows.

I've been looking for something like this for years to chronicle my motorcycle trips.
I was loathe to give up saddlebag space to a full-size laptop and worried that the heat, dust and vibration of motorcycle travel would kill a laptop with a conventional hard disk drive.
