Announcement, 8/11/08 4:15 PST

Since about 2 p.m. Pacific Time today, many Gmail users have been unable to access their email. We are very sorry for this interruption in service. The issue is being caused by a temporary outage in the contacts system used by Gmail which is preventing Gmail from loading properly. We are starting to roll out a fix now and hope to have the problem resolved as quickly as possible. Even though you may not be able to get to your inbox right now, your mail is safe, including new incoming messages.

Heh-heh. Don't know why all of you expect it to work perfectly all the time. Still, at least you are not using YahooMail, which is bouncing stuff on me left & right. And Support never replies.

Yeah, wow... same thing happened to me here in Bosnia last night. However Gmail was NOT DOWN if you visited "m.gmail.com" - all mail accessible (I did not try contacts.) Extremely upsetting/alarming, though it was kind of fun to see how fast comments were posted on twitter about it -seemingly hundreds each minute!
At least we can be thankful incoming messages were ok!

@Mike Cane:
You're right! Also Gmail has free POP and IMAP which were working for some through the outage.

No, not funny at all! 3 accounts with Google and all were unusable yesterday.

Made me ask some serious questions mind. Like, which other email provider(s) do I need to be using in conjunction with my Google email accounts!!

Lol this website claims "1000 [twitter] updates with the word 'gmail' in it within less than five minutes"!

@Dukeswharf
May I suggest GMX.com? I only use them for their available account names but they have free POP and IMAP, so you could have an email client (Thunderbird) regularly download your Gmail accounts mail via POP and then have it auto-uploading to the (backup) GMX account with IMAP.
P.S. The GMX webmail interface is slow.
