Meet Asus Eee PC 900A. Atom and 8GB/16GB SSD for 299E

This is looking super for me!

Atom goodness with Eee 900 design.

CPU: Intel® Atom 1.6Ghz
RAM: 1024MB DDR2
8.9“ WVGA screen, 1024 x 600
8GB / 16GB SSD ( 16GB not yet available )
LAN, Wifi,
3x USB 2.0. 1x VGA-Out D-Sub
0.3 Megapixel Webcam
SD-Card/MMC Slot (SDHC)
Lithium-Ion 4 cell / 4400mAh / 36 Watt
225 x 170 x 20~33,8 mm
990g
Linux

Available: 18.08.2008

Then some speculation:

4 cell 4400mAh would make it a 4 hour device.. but if 700/900 series batteries work on it, we can buy better ones quite cheaply. 5800mAh would make it a 5 hour device with the same size and 7800mAh would keep it going for 7 hours with extra 5mm of size and 100g weight.

SSD Speed? I'm afraid that they are gonna use the slow ones... but there are some 3rd party adapters and SSDs coming.

No bluetooth.. shitty cam

I still want one. The combination of the 900 design and Atom is just right for my mobile needs.

So I ordered one... Speculations will end soon..

Thanks Sascha!

That looks interesting, but I for one would need the extra pros of the 901 but only with the design of the 900. Still going for the 901 then. Selling your jkk? ;)

And also, you haven't had time to run any speed tests on the 32 and 64gb SSDs have you?

JKK said...

Not tested yet... still few days before it's here..

@JKK:
Do you also have the battery-drain over night with your 900? That might also be a downside of the 900A...

JKK said...

I don't think it would have it as 900a is with totally different hw..

901 has good sleep drain ( really small ) so I think this one will too...

WHY They do this??? I just bought my 901 while I still have the 900! Daaaaaaaam

hei jkk!
thanks for all your great posts!
I have a question if possible to answer!
Does laptops go to customs when ordered from abroad in Finland ? or just i don't need to pay anything?
Jenni

JKK said...

Jenni, Sometimes they go and sometimes they don't.. Depends on the sending country..

If you buy from EU and pay tax at origin you don't need to pay anything..

You will have to pay 22% tax if they take it..

im so confused. will the 900A have a zif connector on it? is there soldered ssd or will it just use the mini pci-e

JKK said...

We don't know yet..

As soon as i get mine you will know for sure...

yup this netbook is what i looking for!
1. nice looking eee 900 casing (esp. white!)
2. using intel atom

and.. if we can add a fast ssd rather than the original (slow?) 8G/16G, and we can use extra battery which can be used for 5 hours.. this netbook will be sooo perfect! can't wait.

ps: i don't use bluetooth and webcam. so it's not a problem for me.

Can someone post what differences there are between the 900/901 cases.. thanks!

900A:Will it come with fully-functioning touchpad, with the newest Elantech drivers, also for Linux?
Looking farward to "JKK-901-vs-900A" news =)

Oh boy, I almost ordered one straight away - except they don't seem to have Finland in their drop-down dialog when inputting the address, so I guess I'll have to e-mail them first. How did you arrange it?

Anonymous said...

I don't really see why anyone would choose this when there is the 901.

@digitalranger

It's mainly a matter of aesthetics. The 900 case is, in many people's opinion, nicer than the 901 case. So, a 901 in the 900 case would have been ideal. But the 900A doesn't have the 901's quality webcam or Bluetooth, so there's still a compromise. Maybe there will eventually be a 900B with the quality webcam and Bluetooth as well...

Oh man! That is so unfair. I just got 701 4G at 255 € 1.5 weeks ago because I got tired of waiting for new models... Slow SSD on this new 900A gives me small comfort, though. Faster 4 GB > slow 8 GB.

900/01 sometimes the problems or tastes of a few also become problems of others ... tha's the so calling tastes by osmosis ... lol.
We must avoid saying only evil by saying. And if someone has just buy a 900, do not think he lost the opportunity of his life, because now there is 901 or 900A ... it's just marketing, even if the new model is less than the previous (the case?)...
In my opinion, and I have read alot, more than 50% of the buyers do not need the Eee they bought..., it's only to be in fashion.
If I'm wrong, tell me wath you can do with a 901/900A or even a 1000, that someone can't whith a 900.
Be happy if you can.

Besides that many people (but not me) like 900 design more than 901 one, 900A model seem will be essentially cheaper.

Hi @ all

does anybody know, if the 900A will use the graphic chipset from 900 or from 901?

Thanks

gpu is same as on 901... Intel 945

Hello, Hawe anyone found a place to buy this, where you have the opertunity to ship to sweden?

Anonymous said...

then "900 + slow ssd + atom" IS BETTER THAN "900 + fast 4gb + slow cpu" ?
buying an eeepc is an adventure right now

JKK said...

it might not be better.. we will have to wait and test..

for me it's better as i would mod a fast ssd to it anyway..

Anonymous said...

that will make a 400€ 900a (with a buffalo ssd 32gb). maybe the 8GB ssd is small enough to get a reasonable r/w speed for the same price as 16GB slow 900 ssd.

next battle: 900 4GB+8G vs 900A 8GB (300€'s)

The real question is will this have the ribbon connector to add a HDD ;) if it does ill grab one, add a HDD and pop my 7800mAh mugen power battery in it and laugh to the bank as I sell my oldschool 900.

I should probably find out before I install the touchscreen in my 900.

"WHY They do this??? I just bought my 901 while I still have the 900! Daaaaaaaam"

lol, that's EXACTLY why they do it. They update and improve like a dripping tap...drip drip drip. They know people like you will buy each new update.

ASUS could make the PERFECT laptop tommorow - if they wanted. They would rather string it along an improve incrementally. It's business

Anonymous said...

there will ALWAYS be something wrong with whatever EEE PC you buy. too small screen, design, no blue tooth, poor battery, bad camera...SOMETHING. Because that way they can release 900A, B, C, etc ;)

I don't like the way Asus treat customer as they are fools. They're not a good company

Anonymous said...

can't wait for it... nice body, nice display, nice cpu...

Anonymous said...

What if, the 8 SSD in 900A 8G is the same as in 702 8G? Its reading speed is faster than 4G's but writing speed is a little bit slower. 900A with 702's 8GB SSD would be interesting!

Btw, linux version starts in less than 15 seconds, so it feels like a mobile phone or a pocket pc. ;-) nice toy!

Possibility to order a spare 900 lid, and a 900 30g bottom case and fit it on this? (for looks and hard drive)

Anonymous said...

JKK... Have you noticed that the black and white 900As on comtech.de are shiny/glossy? Putting a bigger battery in or changing the keyboard will make it butt-ugly IMHO... since the rest of the 900-series is matt?

I like the matt-white...

Anonymous said...

JKK, do you already have some more information about the 900A? If not, when do you expect something?

jkk: I have ordered a 900A from German seller
www.linux-onlineshop.de
They ship to Sweden without problems.
I think it will arrive next week if all goes well, just about the same time deliveries of the 901 begins in Sweden.

My new bulky 10800 mAh battery from Hong Kong (for my 900) stopped working. I was offered to send it back for swap (cost me some $25) so it's on it's way back now.
